You’re making shit up. Senator is a partisan, elected office. The Supreme Court is supposed to be non-partisan. Your comparison doesn’t even rise to the level of apples and oranges, more like apples and chairs. The people of California voted Feinstein into office. Why would Newsom not appoint someone at least close to her politically? Anything else would be a breach of the faith of the state’s voters.
