Kenny Pickett's IQ > dummy defenders!

Funniest thing I've seen this week.

Steve A. spazzing out about it...

Steven A is right.

The rules give the QB protection when they slide.

Either make slide fakes illegal or remove the protection.

College rules allow the officials to call the QB down where he begins his slide. This includes faking a slide in which the defender slows or stops in his attempt to make the tackle.

NCAA officials yesterday were instructed to rule the play as dead once a qb starts or fakes a slide. It would have been open season on qb's if they hadn't done so.

As per the rules in place. This is nothing new. It is just PR for you fans.

Then why didn't they bring back the TD and rule him down?

In fairness, it wasn’t much of a fake, but it did appear to be one. You can see where the DB has a bead on him and pulls up after the fake.

The problem here is that there’s no penalty for a fake.

The rule should be clear and there should be a serious price to pay for faking the move. I’d go with 15 yd personal foul and maybe ejection from the game.

If they don’t do this, QBs will continue this move.

In this rare instance I will have to agree with suckaholic. With no repercussions beyond the play being blown dead at the point of the fake slide there's no incentive for the qb to not fake the slide (other than self-preservation if there's still plenty of time on the clock).

Another thing they can do is do away with the idiotic rule that states that the tackler or punt blocker is guilty of a foul if there is any contact at all.

This way the defender can commit to a tackle so long as it is apparent that he backs off and doesn’t completely drill his target.

Good question. This is one where officials are asked to read intent. It is one of the hardest things to officiate. Further officials are told to let plays continue unless they are 100 percent certain it should be stopped. In this case it is very hard to say his intent was 100% to take a slide there a real speed in real time. Just slowing down or easing up isn’t in itself a fake slide or an indicator that a slide is 100% going to happen.

Finally this play isn’t reviewable under current rules, nor would be the officials calling him down for a fake slide.

I don’t see how you can penalize the action of fake sliding either. If it is obvious a player is fake sliding you blow it dead and everyone stops playing.

Are you still talking about fakes here when referencing tacklers? Any contact doesn’t automatically mean a foul occurred, at least in the college game. The NFL could be different. If a qb decides to slide late and there is contact that isn’t forceable there likely will not be a foul.

As for contact with punters not every contact is a foul. Again it has to be serious or egregious contact. Usually contact with the kicking leg is going to be a 5 yard running into foul and contact with the plant foot/leg will be 15 and an auto first down.

Again this is NCAA rules not NFL.

Agreed, they are. And any ball carrier can choose to slide feet first to avoid a hit.

I don’t think Pickett will ever do that in the NFL. Too many LBs and Safeties that would love to pay back a QB for something that bush. Then again he’s going to have a rule named after him. Not many NFL rookies can say that. Hope the Steelers get him.

An official that doesn’t know the rules. How surprising.

Yes it is illegal, it is a blind side block.

There is no need for it. You do not need to try to injure a player on purpose which is what you are describing. A player that doesn’t see you coming takes very little effort to block.

As for old school football there are something’s that I miss and lots that I don’t. Take water breaks vs drinking water whenever you want.

Of course there are defenseless players. Blindside blocks were the 2nd most injured type of plays following kickoffs.

I only got to play football through High School but my most favorite thing in the games was what my position coach taught me and he called it "Ear Holing." It was essentially an open crack back block where you would hit the l defender high while he was looking at the ball carrier and never even saw you coming. I remember coach would say he'd want to see the "Hand of Jesus" which I didn't understand the meaning of at the time. When you had a good ear hole, the sound the dude would make, he'd go dead limp and crush under you, the stadium would lose its shit and I could hear coach Robert's scream "yeah baby" from the sky. When you play WR on a team that never threw the ball, Ear Holing was your TD andd it got you a HAMMER decal for your helmet.
I'm sure it's illegal as hell now
Amazing story.

Sincerely,

Pickett could’ve faked eating a cheeseburger and likely still would have scored on Wake Forest’s defense.

There were no defenseless players, you had to keep your head on a swivel and if ear holing a dude in to next week made it so your teams rushes went a few yards farther and we won the game then that was the purpose...as I understood it.
You are such a liar.
