I always thought of eventhing between SF and maybe Santa Barbara as central. SC is almost dead center between Oregon line and TJ.

As to your (or whomever it was') point that Ohio is called the midwest, when it clearly isn't, geographically speaking, the term dates back to a time when the Mississippi River was the western frontier. In that day, Ohio was in the "midwest".

Cali, to my knowledge, is different. When Cali was admitted to the union, it was in its current geographical form. Norcal was Norcal, in 1849. Cencal was Cencal and Socal was Socal.
