I think these days it boils down to religion. Somehow over the years rigid Christianity has infiltrated the conservative cause. Artists tend to be freer thinkers and scientists and college professors tend to be better educated as to the problems caused by interpreting the Bible literally, thus they gravitate toward being liberal.
