It's a major crossroads. Hwy 40 goes east through Flagstaff, Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Nashville, Raleigh,etc. Hwy 15 goes south through San Bernardino and Riverside to San Diego, and north to Vegas and Salt Lake City. California 58 goes west through Bakersfield to San Luis Obispo.

That being said, there's not much there, besides maybe a Best Western.

Baker is a lot more interesting, about 60 miles farther up the 15. You have the world's tallest thermometer and the Mad Greek Cafe.

Not picking on anyone as I have lived in some places with strange naming of freeways. In fact the best naming of freeways might have been in Houston where the nicknames were the direction the freeway went leaving downtown. Made it really easy for visitors and others to follow along.

You should have been here 30 years ago. It was almost impossible to navigate through LA because all they had on the signs was Golden State Freeway, San Diego Freeway, Harbor Freeway, Pasadena Freeway, Hollywood Freeway, San Bernardino Freeway, Foothill Freeway, etc., etc.

That's the reason they're referred to with "the" in front of the numbered routes - they were always called "the <insert place name here>freeway", so it was just natural to put "the" in front when they started being referred to as numbered routes.
