After a successful campaign of being the exact sort of odious vessel for American self-loathing that GOP voters have most responded to this election, Ted Cruz narrowly avoided an upset by pulling an ad that unwittingly featured a softcore porn star—a gaffe that would have come dangerously close to making him appealing.
As BuzzFeed News reports, the Cruz campaign recently debuted a new spot titled “Conservatives Anonymous,” in which conservative voters attend a faux group therapy session to express feelings of betrayal by Marco Rubio’s stance on immigration. It was a deeply unfunny ad full of graceless, charmless manipulation that, unfortunately, also featured Amy Lindsay, an actress who has appeared in such projects as Co-Ed Confidential, Kinky Sex Club, Carnal Wishes, and MILF, thus giving Cruz a totally off-brand allure.
After learning that they had accidentally made Ted Cruz enticing, campaign spokesman Rick Tyler was quick to remove the ad and pin the blame. “The actress responded to an open casting call,” he told BuzzFeed. “She passed her audition and got the job. Unfortunately, she was not vetted by the production company. Had the campaign known of her full filmography, we obviously would not have let her appear in the ad.” In fact, it’s possible Cruz’s campaign was only informed of Lindsay’s non-adult film credits like Star Trek: Voyager and Stepsister From Planet Weird, and just naturally assumed she had the kind of cold, extraterrestrial quality associated with their candidate.
For Lindsay’s part, the actress—a self-described “Christian conservative”—told BuzzFeed she thought it was “cool” that an erotic actress would appear in an ad for Ted Cruz, thus illustrating just how little she gets what Ted Cruz is about.
Anyway, although pulling the ad ensures Cruz’s campaign will remain free of anything approaching temptation—thereby securing his base of neutered, sexless automatons—it may have cost him Lindsay’s vote, at least. She’s since tweeted that she is “extremely disappointed” in Cruz’s decision, and is currently weighing whether to stick with his campaign, or follow her passion for dicks by voting Trump.
