The day my dad was murdered has been told before. I wasn't old enough to be a man at that point, but I was old enough to understand what happened and that gave me a lot of anger in general and hatred towards the idiot.

Maybe the day I became a man is when I started to lose some of that anger.

On the other hand maybe the day I became a man is when I decided to work for myself and leave a comfortable stable yob.

I want to say it was in mid 2008 when I left the midwest for DC, but I would say it was a little bit after that.

Another milestone commonly sited is "day I stopped having to use the laundromat."

There's hope for you yet, screwey.

The day I replaced the starter on my first car, a '67 Chevy Impala SS. I had no idea what the fuck I was doing. Busted, bloody knuckles galore.

The first time I was in a firefight in Nam. I was scared shitless and saw bullets kicking up dirt in front of me but held my ground. It was also the first time I saw dead people up close and personal. From young boy to a old man in about 30 seconds.

The thread made it to the 6th post before "AP became a man when __________" was lobbed in.

Knowing how the board rolls, I actually imagined it would come sooner.

So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one -- big hitter, the Lama -- long, into a ten-thousand foot crevice, right at the base of this glacier. And do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga...gunga -- gunga galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

I don't know about that. It was certainly a moment of great personal truth. Maybe if I had been younger at the time. I was already 25 at the time.

It was a few years before the first Smack Chat was even a thing. Back in 1995. So I've been cancer free for 19 years now. Surviving cancer, for me, wasn't that hard. I got off easy with no chemo or radiation. Just three very invasive surgeries. It was what I saw in the hospital while recovering from complication from the final 3+ hour long operation that made me a different person. You stop feeling sorry for yourself real quick when you realize that people around you are going through real hell every day.

The first day I made a 9 year old run wind sprints until he puked for missing the cut off man. The power that surged through my veins transcended manhood.

Word bro.

Having had my share of serious health issues in the last 4 years, I really never thought I was that bad off as some I saw. When I went in for my last appointments in March, which involved an MRI, I looked around and thought, I am walking out of this place today. There was a lot of people that were probably not leaving that hospital alive, and a lot had some real serious shit ahead of them.

First Smack Chat was about 96 I believe.

If you went to Tuality Hospital, a lot of people who go in with a hangnail or to have a boil lanced don't leave there alive.

I got the first award after 90 days in country. I was drafted and only served in the army 22 months total. I did know a few guys with the second award which meant Korea and Nam. The third award would have been WWII, Korea and Nam. Seeing that one on anybody was pretty fuckin rare. It is called a CIB, Combat Infantry Badge. If you weren't in the infantry and served in combat you couldn't get one. Not even Green Beret's or Special Forces could get it.

B,

What kind of cancer did you have?

Rack you for wiping your dick on the Big C's drapes.

And rack your coments about seeing people who really are having a bad fukking day. There are a lot of whiny little bitches out there who would be well served by a walk through a hospital.

I had a Liposarcoma in the small of my lower back. It developed inside a birthmark and went unnoticed for quite some time. When they pulled it out it was the size of 2-3 golf balls. I give my racks to MRI technology and a good scalpel man who was able to get it all out of me eventually. I was a lucky man to be born when I was.

As for the hospital, I am humbled to this day by the people I met there. Yea, most people could stand a walk through a hospital to remind them how lucky they are and of the inevitability that awaits us all.
