Study: Seattle Worker Needs Min. Wage Of $21.60/Hour To Afford Two-Bedroom Rental

Even hiking the minimum wage to $15 an hour may not be enough to allow low-wage workers to afford rent in Seattle, according to a new study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

The group says a full-time worker in the Seattle-Bellevue metro area needs to earn $21.60 an hour to afford a two-bedroom apartment. That’s the so-called housing wage that the group calculates. In Washington state, the housing wage is $18.65 per hour.

The group estimated that the worker spends no more than 30 percent of his or her income on rent and utilities. For the price of a two-bedroom apartment in Seattle, the group used $1,123 per month, the fair-market rent estimated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

So the lowest level workers need to earn $45K. If that is the case how are the poor folks on welfare going to be able to afford their McDonald's? Say goodbye to the dollar menu and hello to the five dollar menu.

This of course will lead to more handwringing about how the evil rich corporations (McDonalds) are sticking it to the poor.

False.

Why does a single worker need to rent a 2 bedroom apartment? Or rent one at the fair market rate? He or she can get a room mate and they would only need to make $10.80 an hour. They can make that much easily enough slinging grande Fapgasmic Dildoccinos at Starbucks.

Why do they only need one roommate? If they get three roommates they only need to make around 5$ an hr.

Pay your workers shit wages, then expect them to buy your produce on credit.

Let me know how that works out for you.

If you are concerned about income inequality, you must support aggressive enforcement and deportation of all illegal immigrants.

I'm sure the skewed wealth distribution has nothing to do with the geniuses that decided it was a good idea to offer incentives to ship jobs overseas, then charge an onerous tax should companies actually want to bring their profits back into the US.

Who came up with that stupid idea, anyway? Oh, that's right -- the husband of the person that JSC wants to be the next president. Talk about party-blindness leading to stupidity -- support Clinton, then complain about income inequality... dumbass.

Don't get me wrong, it was a bipartisan grift. But go ahead and keep reelecting the people who support this ridiculous policy, asshats.

In most all cases, people earn what they're worth or deserve.

Likewise, it's not how much you make that matters, it's how much you keep.

Jsc,

As an attorney, would you be willing to reduce your wages in order to close this income gap? It is far easier to restrict the earrings of those who make too much than it is to inflate the earnings of those at the bottom.

War,

Don't mind Diego. He thinks that length of time on the job is a measure of an employees worth rather than merit. An employee in the same position for twenty years who hasn't been promoted and produces 20 widgets is worth far more than an employee in the same job who has only been there for a few months but produces 50 widgets.

And I'm sure that's the exact same line of thinking that Boeing executives used when they decided to have that bunch of 7Late7 planes built in South Carolina. How'd that work out for them?

Seems to be working quite well for them. I have flown on a 787 assembled in SC. It was a very pleasant flight.

It may have been the same thinking that kept the 777x in Washington. A vote that prevents a strike before 2024, ends pension contributions in 2016, etc, etc. The local leadership would rather have seen the jobs go away, thankfully for the workers the National leadership forced a vote.

Further get over the delays to the 787. The A380 had them as well. They also had a huge issue with the plane that almost cost lives. See also delays in the A350. Had every single part been manufactured and installed in Washington state, there still would have been delays and teething issues, like damn near all new planes brought to market.

Yeah, it's going reeeeal well for them.

Sincerely,
South Carolina media.

And by the way, that's 1.5 planes per month compared to 7 done in Washington. But I guess in your world experience & know-how isn't worth anything, right?

Finally, yes all planes have hiccups. But between the fastener fuckup by outsource supplier Alenia in Italy & the total FUBAR at South Carolina (most of their products have to be reworked when they get to Everett) this plane is YEARS behind & has cost the company BILLIONS (they'll be lucky to even make it out of the red).

Your analysis is the aeronautical version of Baghdad Bob. Take off your bukake-covered glasses & look at reality.

I don't have any rose colored glasses on. At the end of the day Boeing may have made the wrong choice for its plant outside of Washington. A better choice would have been North Texas, North Florida, or Alabama. Each has a number of skilled aerospace workers available.

That in no way changes the fact Boeing had to move some production out of WA. More than half of the Seattle area workforce is over 50. Huge issue facing them in a few years when all those old hands retire. The good news for Boening is that the union will likely take a hit as well as younger workers are far less likely to be union supporters.

Further, if unionization happens at the SC plant, that shouldn't improve the production by itself. It will still be the same workers doing the same jobs. Yet my gut tells me that suddenly production will increase. The reason for that is simple. The union hacks in WA will suddenly stop creating issues or will overlook other minor ones.

To expect a brand new facility to hit the ground running at the same level as one that has been around for the better part of a century, is unrealistic. Particularly in a bidness as complicated as building ginormous airliners. It has jack fukking shit to do with being union or not.

Lefty does make a good point about south carolina prolly not being the ideal choice. I think Florida would have been better as there are an assload of former NASA folks down there who are looking for yobs.

Dude -- don't shoot yourself (and the rest of us) in the foot. The little man actually said something reasonable, thought-out, and intelligent in this thread.

How many years has it been since that last happened?

Maybe we should instead offer encouragement, rather than derision... like maybe a false promise of buying him a puppy, or offering to have Diego buy him an ice cream or something.
