I literally can't count the number of times I've wished I had eight (or more) crockpots that I could plug in together.

They're fuckin' STACKABLE.

Thankfully my wife and I are lucky enough to have pretty much everything we need. If we see something that we want we just get it.

This tends to lead to the same issue that Scott mentioned above. So the wife and I have started getting each other experiences instead of traditional gifts. With that in mind this would be at the top of my list:

Damn straight. We give plenty of time and money to a variety of charities, including food banks and housing authorities. My porch isn't one of those.

Bri has a fine idea, but it would be my summer place. Love Lake Placid, but for the winter I'd have a place on the beach on Sanibel Island.

Well isn't that just special.

Staying on the beach with a hurricane coming is not a wise decision. My place here is inland enough and so far, hurricanes are really no big deal. If I was on Sanibel, I'd be taking a vacation inland till it blew over.

Summer and Christmas in Placid. The rest of the cold months just south of the ATL. That's my dream scenario.

a nice set of digs in La Jolla Cali.....something along the beach would be nice......
it's nice weather almost all year round and as a resident of san diego county, I could get on to Torrey Pines for about $70 instead of the $200 they charge out of towners........

I'm headed down there at the end of January and I think I'm going to take my clubs, show up at 6:30 put my clubs in line and hope to get out as a single.....that way I can avoid all the ancillary costs associated with booking a tee time in advance.....of course, you take the chance you might not get out, but I think I'm going to give it a go......

I have that winter climate. You get the occasional very nice day and a whole lot of cold and shitty, but not quite cold enough to have to shovel it. Does this beat the frozen wasteland you spend the winter in? I guess, but, it would not be very high on my list of ideal places to spend winter.

For me, I guess I would have a place on the beach somewhere in socal. Perfect weather all year unlike Florida which is nice for about 15 minutes in January. I would likely also have a place somewhere around tahoe.

I forgot about socal. On purpose. I'll visit socal sometime before deciding if I should live there. I concur on Florida. Basically 2 months a year are remotely tolerable. December and January. I have family in the ATL, and they tell me there is nowhere near the amount of wintertime humidity that you get in say New England. And have you heard about SoCal in February?

I am going to make the assumption that "family" has done multiple winters in crapchester home of chinese water torture type winter flurries. So yeah, the ATL is nicer. New England? Depends where. It can get pretty dry here when the temp drops.

Anyhoo, the bottom line here is that SEC winters, while nicer than crapchester winters, are still the suck. socal or sofla (for 15 minutes) are where you go, if you can afford it. Or hawaii, if you got kc scott money.

the Good:
No snow, freezing temperatures, ice. You could easily keep a car like forever.
Low property taxes and no income tax, 6% sales tax. Thank you snow birds.
Mostly sunny days. Even in winter the lack of daylight hours is not so drastic as in northern latitudes.
Mostly warm days and not just December and January when it actually can get chilly. Even in summer, I have never seen air temperature above 95º.
For MrsO, being able to do gardening 365 days a year, no cabin fever.
Got a pool I can use 365 days a year with solar heated water and heat pump back up. Had a swim this afternoon with pool water at 85º using only solar.
I don't ride motorcycles, fish, boat, or golf; but if you do, this is a good place to be.
the BAD:
Water co$t$. Having a pool and lawn irrigation system on county water is expen$ive. This almost balances out my energy costs which are less down here.
Homeowners insurance. Even though we have not had a major hurricane in years, we still pay for it.
Summer I admit are too long. The real downside is having to mow about every 5 days and constantly weeding, etc. to keep the sub-tropical rain forest from growing.
As an offset, you do your yard work early or late, and with AC and a pool it is bearable. Still beats months of cabin fever. We usually visit family and friends up north around the end of August.
Traffic when snowbirds are here, on the road and in your favorite restaurants. No, we don't eat out every day. Our only regular no-cook day is Sunday.

Depends on the family. My sister in laws are from Georgia and Iowa respectively. The kids are native to Georgia. My brothers and parents are the ones who spend a lot of time in Rochester. And with the ATL you have great college football within road trip distance all over the place. GaTech plays in town, UGA is an hour away, Clemson 2.5 hours, Auburn is maybe 3 hours, South Carolina 4 hours?
What do you get in SoCal? USC, UCLA and.... SDSU? Fresno?

Plus there are NFL teams that visit and play the local semi-pro team in the Georgia Dome and MLB. I don't know, I just like it, as long as I don't have to be there in the summertime.
