Anyone ever been to Italy?

Friends of ours own a timeshare in Tuscany and invited us to go along this year. We would fly into Madrid and spend 2 days there, a week at the timeshare and another couple days in Sorrento. We have a couple kids in college and my hubby is plugging along paying the tuition, etc. We are remodeling our bathrooms along with all the house plumbing also. He did say he'd like to go on the trip, (He'd rather see Spain than Italy.) but he's not quite as excited about it as I am because he hates flying and I don't think he wants to spend another 4K right now.

Here's my question....I have a few bucks saved up and I was thinking about buying the airline tickets for us (which is much of the cost of trip) and surprising him for Christmas. What do you think? It makes me feel just a little guilty because I would give him the gift, but I want it even more.

Otherwise he's difficult to buy for like most men. Should I do this????????

If you can go to Italy and you don't go, you should be burned at the stake.

Don't even contemplate not going. Italy is a must-see. Fucking gorgeous.

Italy is beautiful. Go, if you really can aford it. If you can't afford it give him a nice hummer or three instead. We men really aren't as hard to please as you think.

Would you be going in the winter? It can get chilly there, but, not so much that it wouldn't still be nice. Also, there would be fewer tourists.

Go to Rome if you can. That place is hands down, the most packed with ancient cool shit, city in the world. Just watch your valuables. The pick pockets and camera/purse snatchers are all over.

The trip is in May. Not sure we would get to see Rome. I realize it doesn't take much to please a guy. I try not to disappoint my husband.

You cannot go to Italy without at least including Rome somewhere in the itinerary. It's the law.

Oh, and while you're in Tuscany, see if you can't hook up some quality time for you and your husband with Diane Lane. That'll mollify 'im.

Most definitely. We've been planning to do a trip like that for several years but other things, including overcoming the intertia to actually put it together, have always gotten in the way. We may even go next year (our 25th is in June) but, as usual, I fear that we will wait too long to get the process started.

My daughter went to summer school in Tuscany (in Arezzo) a couple of years ago and loved it. Pretty damn hot in the summer though.

Forgot to add...if the OL presented me with tickets and hotel reservations (even better yet a week at a some Tuscan villa including cooking classes), without me having to arrange anything, I'd definitely be "siked".

What part of Tuscany is the timeshare? What time of year will you be going?

As far as passing up Sorrento goes, you'd have to be a complete ass. Mt Vesuvius, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri?

When my wife and I went to Italy, we flew into Rome (connected from Milan, actually) and headed north. I wish we'd taken another week and started lower.

Or a steak and BJ. Your call...

Yes, actually I have. I was at the Italian Embassy for an event on Saturday. So yes, technically, I have been to Italy.

Why are you such a pig?

trev, disregard mvscal and his boorish manner. We, on the other hand, can make sandwiches together.

You stupid fag. She doesn't want to make sandwiches together. She uses that time alone to rinse her mouth out and quietly masturbate while I'm snoring loudly on the bed.

Two kids in college - hubby is busting @ss to pay the bills - and we're talking about spending 4 grand for a vacation... in this economy?

Really?

Why don't you donate the "few bucks you have saved" toward the kids' college educations?

What are they studying, btw?

I'd take the vaca after the kids are out of college, trev.

Europe's not going anywhere.

Just me.

Been to Rota, Spain and it's cool to see for Happy Hour. Italy? Sicily looks like the Central CA Valley, Rome is a place for tourists, Pompei and Mt Vesuvio and the ruins are cool to see for about an hour, a few hours north of Roma is all beautiful countryside and they don't let developers ruin the countryside.

Nobody here will believe this story, I got hammered on Italian wine and tripped over a ledge and was hospitalized for 3 days. My friends made sure I had my own hospital room and were bedside making sure the staff took care of me. Broke 3 ribs on that fall and their pain medicine sucks. When I checked out, the bill was $13 US for the ambulance and hospital stay.

There are many romantic places for you to get a bukkake party.

Poptart, they are both engineering students. One is just finishing up, one is just starting. Believe me when I tell you I help contribute to their many expenses and support them so they don't have to work a lot while going to school.

Here is the timeshare. I'm sold.

Love the locale. Can't stand the fat, ostentatious Americans who drape the arms of their useless sweaters over their shoulders like they're corpulent J. Crew models. trev, if you or mvscal should ever find yourselves wearing your sweaters like that, please have the decency to finish the job by tying those sleeves into a tight knot and strangling the life out of each other.

God, I hate the sight of overfed American tourists trampling all over Italy.

Going next summer is a pretty good bet IMHO - at least in terms of cost

The USD should buy a lot more Euros by then - seeing as how they are going to have to start printing a bunch of them in order to save defaults by Italy, Spain, Greece etc.
are there enough presses in europe to print fake euros faster than we are printing greenbacks? or do they just do the cyber euros like the fed does?

Just keep your usual look -- unkempt bush/armpits with your tits hanging out and you'll blend right in like AP at a Gay Pride Parade.

We are traveling to Italy next fall. Land in Rome and stay for several days, with a day trip to Florence. Travel by train to Naples for a couple of days, maybe see Amalfi and Mt. Vesuvius. Overnight ferry boat to Siciliy, and about eight or nine days in a villa just outside Palermo.

Father-in-law’s parents came over on the boat from Sicily years ago, so the in-laws are renting the villa for six weeks. We get to stay free.

Any ideas on things we shouldn’t miss would be appreciated. Random smack shall be dealt with quickly and harshly.
