I just don't get the Vegas Appeal...

Post by Left Seater »

I know this puts me in the minority view point, but I just don't get it. I picked up a trip and spent Sunday evening thru yesterday in Sin City.

Don't smoke, don't eat at buffets, don't spa, don't really care to gamble, so what's left? I went on the Dam Tour and hiking around some red rocks. That occupied a decent portion of two days, but still had a ton of time to kill. I did play a few hands of blackjack and poker, but I would rather donate my money to a worthy cause than give it to a casino. Love sitting at the tables listening to people attempt to Jedi mind trick themselves as they tell people how they just won $300. Sure, great, you won $300 but what about the $700 you had in your wallet when you arrived. You are still down $400 despite "winning" $300.

Yes, there are some great restaurants, but long waits and premium prices get old very fast. Granted some cool shows there too, but then most of them make it thru my town sooner or later.

Granted it might be cool to watch college football in the sports book, but I don't see making a vacation out of one day of football watching on TV.

Vegas is like a cruise, I just don't get it.

I would want to see Don Rickles and eat at one of those nice places. I don't gamble as it doesn't appeal to me. Seeing the entertainment would be cool. Hiking sounds like fun now that it's cooled down over there.

I dont smoke or gamble and still have a great time in Vegas every couple months or so when I go.

Where else am i going to get to ump off the side of a space needle, zip line 60 mph down some cliffs or shoot a 50 cal machine gun. The place is like Disneyland with drinks it would be perfect if they picked the place up and dropped it off in Monterey or Carmel or something, then we could do all the fun things there and go to the beach

I lived there for five years, four of them trying desparately to get back to LoCal. We went to maybe three shows in that time and played some slots maybe twice with a roll of quarters as a budget. You can (or could at the time in the mid 90s) play video poker in supermarkets, gas stations, etc., etc. Prolly have them in the high schools by now.

Always avoided the Strip like the plague. It was a big traffic/pedestrian jam packed with fat honkies in bermuda shorts. On crowded (most) days it's almost impossible to make a right turn onto the strip because of the endless lines of pedestrians crossing. I think maybe thay have some flyovers now? Since the kids were very young then we used to take a nighttime drive down the strip every couple of months to look at the lights.

I left in 1999 and haven't been back since.

Nothing, really. The only reason to go to Vegas is for a bachelor party that involves strippers/hookers and copious amounts of alcohol and blow. I guess I actually buy into the whole "what happens there, stays there" motto...

Mrs. Rumps and I made reservations at four different three different steakhouses and never waited in line to get our table. I enjoy watching Holly Madison prance around naked. And yes, the sportsbook on Saturday and Sunday is beyond great.

If you think Vegas is meh, then have your fucking pulse checked.

I can eat in great steakhouses here at home or when I travel.

I can see strippers just about anywhere.

vegas is for doucherags who either overestimate their abilities with simple math (rain man worked the system: if that retard did it so can i) or want to live out some swingers/hangover fantasy where all they have to do is roll in, pop a collar, and make jokes about blow before some hottie falls into their lap even though what really happens is they pay $50 to get into some club just to stand around looking at all the real players pull the ass they're going to lie about when they go home. "duuuuuuuude, vegas was off the chain!!!!!" love when anyone like lefty asks about the appeal and someone invariably brings up food. who's going to fly all the way to vegas for a fucking steak? probably cost you less in the long run to fly down to argentina and pay $5 for a whole cow and half its newborn calf, not to mention the latina girls who (1) are 100x hotter than the trailer trash bitches who usually descend on vegas and (2) will give you the time of day.

Well, I think it helps if it's only a 6-hour drive (or $99 round-trip plane ticket) away. It also helps if you're single and willing to engage in activities you otherwise wouldn't. It's not someplace I frequent. I haven't been there in probably five or six years. I guess I just like the idea that at least one city still exists in this PC/nanny-state country where you can smoke indoors, carry an open bottle of beer on the sidewalk, bet on a football game and just generally raise hell with a bunch of like-minded individuals.

I was in Vegas for a few nights when I was 16. I thought it was great the casinos had sweet, full-sized arcades. Played a lot of NBA Hang Time, NFL Blitz and Super Street Fighter II Turbo. All the sweet ass arcade games of your youth, they had them. I'd like to go back to watch the big dance the first Thursday and Friday of the tournament. That would be great. I don't really have high expectations for the place.

Pearl Jam's had a few legendary performances in Vegas, so I at least have to give the city that.

Look Bl0w, I have to maintain the image of nonsensical postings here. Sometimes a really interesting subject pops up and I chime in with a normal take. Mostly this place sucks with horrible posters dropping steamers in almost every thread.

I like what KC Scott just wrote and also what Mikey said. I've heard what a horrible place Vegas is as a resident and I have no desire to ever spend any time there other than for the 2 reasons I've stated above.

I would love to see the shows and eat at a few restaurants even if I had to wait in line.

That's funny... since one of my good high school girlfriends... and make out partners in College at UCSB(before going to Cal in 1984) now makes her home in Henderson.

We grew up together as kids ... and went to Terra Linda High School

I guess your taste in women is like Van's with Annie. Those lizard thin lips, dyed hair, and sagging boobs... yeah, what a score. I'd pay for a hooker over dealing with that skank you've claim to know. More wind chimes, less postings for you would be a good idea.

I am of the opinion to give KC Scott a break other than what the reindeer are going to take him to task in a month.

However, M2/.m2/m2 sounds more and more like a resident from a certain town in Missouri. Just horrible replies and it's embarrassing to witness.

I actually lived in Henderson when I was there (Green Valley is what they called the area). Drove into town to a lab near UNLV every morning. Luckily I lived and worked on the east side so I never had to cross the strip or the freeway. Drove past Wayne Newton's place twice a day. Saw Mike Tyson one morning being driven around in his green Bentley convertible. Kenny Rogers in his red NSX. Can't say it wasn't an interesting place but I fucking hated it. Too hot in the summer and too clod in the winter (yeah I'm a Cali wuss). Cabs all around advertising "Naked Girls of Glitter Gulch". The schools in Green Valley were excellent but I really didn't want my kids growing up there.

So many thoughts come to mind...

1. That must've been one helluva Cinco de Mayo party
2. It wasn't even midnight yet. Either they had an early night by Vegas standards, or they cracked the $200k mark at the next club just on cover charges alone.
3. I could sell my condo and both my cars and still not be able to cover that tab
4. I love that there's a line to add an additional gratuity if you're so inclined
5. Who's the fag who ordered two Bud Lights?

Not particularly.

I paid about the same in a bottle store off the strip as I do here. Nowhere near as cheap as I find in california.

My wife and I had been having a pretty shitty year with trying to get pregnant. There were two short pregnancies that miscarried. We were going to useless fertility treatments. I was spending money like a sieve. She suddenly said one night, "We should fly to Vegas!"

I blurted out, "What!? No!"

She was hurt by this, but then later, after she stopped being pissed at me, that considering the money that I'd been shelling out for medical expenses, that the LAST thing I wanted to do was go to a place that practically requires you to spend money.

So it was ironic that a few months later my Mom calls and asks what we're doing in June. She decided to fly all of us kids and our wives to Las Vegas for my niece's high school graduation out there. Even though, she paid for the flight and our rooms, I still managed to spend 800 dollars in 5 days on overpriced food, overpriced drinks and many other overpriced things in that shit town. After another shelling money for a virgin strawberry daiquiri at the Monte Carlo's pool area, which cost fucking 12 bucks (!!!) I handed it to my wife (who was a month pregnant then. She's due in January), I muttered, "Have I mentioned how much I HATE this fucking place."

We did a renewal of vows ceremony at the Little White Wedding Chapel, which has been featured in movies and on the show, Friends (It's way dumpier in person). The ceremony cost 80 bucks but didn't include any pictures or video. Of course, we weren't allowed to film AND the preacher had to be tipped a suggested 40 dollars minimum.

My older brother was excited on the way to Vegas about the 5 dollar steak someone told him about. We looked at him dumbfounded. "We're from Nebraska, you idiot! We can get a much better steak for cheaper at any time!"

The constant pitches to see a "free" show that requires you to buy two drinks at a minimum, the constant handing of naked women cards by the street teams (my brother in law took them every time and had a huge stack by the time we were done), the parents that drag their kids down the strip (for what? They can't gamble) and the general attitude of give us more sucker just put me in a bad mood most days I was there.

I'm a big supporter of public schools. I live in a district that's considered one of the best in the midwest. The yearbook for the Vegas high school my niece was graduating from didn't instill a lot of confidence, though. The yearbook was filled with some very embarrassing misspelling and grammatical errors. I was glad to leave that hell hole. I swear I will only go back if someone pays for it. They suck you in with cheap airfare and hotels, but you will get bled dry when you are there. My brother spent 15 dollars to ride the New York New York roller coaster. 15 dollars! For one 3 minute ride!

I did eat well at the two buffets I went to though, the Cosmopolitan's brunch buffet was AWESOME. The Bellagio's buffet was also excellent.

I lost about 80 bucks gambling, 20 of which was lost in about 60 seconds at one of those video blackjack machines where they show stone-faced boob jobbed models acting like they are handing out cards. I always think of Mitch Hedberg's joke about gambling where they advertise for something good (winning) that hardly ever happens, which is the opposite of all other advertising.

Sounds like a cruise. Another vacation I want no part of. My wife was given a cruise by her company a few years back while we were dating. She lead so turnaround of the division and since she didn't get the sales compensation others did they paid for a cruise. Well three days into the seven day cruise we got off the boat and never got back on. Had to listen to all kinds of crap from the cruise line about how we might never get home, etc. Enjoyed Cancun and Cozumel and then flew home. I have never wanted a vacation to end except for those two and a half days on that damn boat.

Congrats on the pregers.

Thanks. It's a boy! Due in January.

Cruises are another thing I don't want any part of. I see the commercials where they show all the fun stuff you can do on a cruise and all I can think of it how you could do any of that stuff anywhere else.

At least if you book a Disney vacation, which I have twice, you spend most of your money up front. They don't try to bleed you dry in the parks, even though they could. Unlike a cruise, you aren't trapped at the resort with strangers you'd rather not talk to.

On a side note, I see that they are offering a Husker cruise in 2012. I would love to go not to hang out with the former players, but just so I could go up to Matt Davidson (the guy who caught the kicked ball for a TD in 97 against Missouri) and ask, "Wait a minute? Are you trying to tell ME that YOU caught a ball that was kicked up into the air for a TD before it hit the ground? I hadn't heard that story 1000 times already."

Then if he reminds me for the 10,000th time that he was a former player (like he always does on NU broadcasts), I'd be like, "Shut the front door! You played for NU? And you managed to parlay that one catch into a career as an annoying, marginally talented, no-it-all, annoying NU announcer/gadfly?"
