Demitra was one of the original Grand Rapids Griffins, played for the team in its IHL debut in 96-97.

Brad McCrimmon was also killed in the crash.

Yeah, both McCrimmon and Salei were with the Wings last year. McCrimmon was let go and Paul MacLean went on to get the Ottawa job so Babs brought in two new assisants. Salei was allowed to walk as a UFA when the Wings re-signed Lidstrom and Ericsson and signed Ian White and Mike Commodore. There wasn't any room for Salei on the depth chart. It's really sad that those two had to settle for gigs in Russia because they were squeezed out in the NHL and then this happens. Igor Korolev and Alexander Karpovtsev were McCrimmon's assistants...spooky to hear some of the recent ex-NHLers that died in the crash. I didn't quite understand...was Demitra actually on the team or was he traveling with the team?

I don't know about squeezed out, maybe they weren't offered the salaries that they thought they could earn in the show and decided to take the rubles and play out east.

I believe Demitra was on the team, he was out of the NHL for a few years.

They had Vinny Lecavalier on the radio here the day after it happened and he mentioned at how much he thought his life was in danger flying on the planes in Russia.
