Basically what sank this company was the $700 million building they've been constructing for the past couple of years just off a major freeway near here. The problem is, while Solyndra was focused on their shiny new building, all of the other players in the solar game have been refining their manufacturing processes and producing a cheaper, more efficient product.

Had they built a $200 million building, they'd still be in business right now.

Yeah, but somebody's gonna end up with a nice new $700 million building.

Maybe Zhejiang Wanxiang Solar.

Solopower is setting up a plant in North Portland.

They're going against the grain, I guess, since they're moving into an existing building (apparently the largest vacant one in town).

And getting a boatload of tax breaks to do it -- not sure why The People have to pay for someone else to profit from an unprofitable business, but they're promising 500 jobs eventually, and goodness knows this town needs it.

Of course they went under. The electricity bill for a building that size would bankrupt anybody.

Surely this is just a result of prejudiced tea party types conspiring against them. I am sure every other business Obama ever started was successful. Oh, wait. That's right he never has started or ran one.

The 700 million dollar building was obviously a bone thrown to the union contractors there.

Wonder what they could have built it for with normal market rate labor? Or better yet, just hanging a a new sign on an existing vacant building. I am reasonably certain there is a vacant building or 500 hundred in the area that would have suited them.

Looks like now there's one more. A really pretty one.

Nice job, you jug eared dolt.

To be fair, the Department of Energy granted a massive loan to fund the building in March '09. It stands to reason the work on that loan began long before that. The only work Obama had done at the point was work the ass grooves into his seat on AF1 and write the rough draft of his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Try being correct rather than "fair" next time.
Did Obama Administration Cut Corners For a Green Energy Company?

The Obama administration bypassed procedural steps meant to protect taxpayers as it hurried to approve an energy loan guarantee to a politically-connected California solar power startup, ABC News and the Center for Public Integrity's iWatch News have learned.

The Energy Department in March 2009 announced its intention to award Solyndra Inc. a $535 million loan guarantee before receiving final copies of outside reviews typically used to vet such deals. An independent federal auditor who has reviewed the energy loan program said moving so quickly without completing thorough reviews risked exposing the program to claims of political influence and put taxpayers at greater risk.

"There's a consequence if you don't follow a rigorous process that's transparent," said Franklin Rusco, an analyst with the Government Accountability Office. "It makes the agency more susceptible to outside pressures, potentially."

...........

The loan guarantee, the administration's first for a clean energy project, benefited a company whose prime financial backers include Oklahoma oil billionaire George Kaiser, a "bundler" of campaign donations. Kaiser raised at least $50,000 for the president's 2008 election effort.

Several political allies of the president have ties to companies receiving Energy Department loans, grants or loan guarantees. For instance, the venture firm of another top Obama bundler, Steve Westly, has financially supported companies that won more than half a billion dollars in energy grants and loans during President Obama's time in office, iWatch News and ABC News reported in March. Relatively few applicants succeed in winning such benefits. The Energy Department said every one of those awards was won on merit.

...............

Energy Secretary Steven Chu promised Solyndra's package alone would create more than 4,000 jobs.
Yet another "shovel ready" failure from "the most transparent administration in history."

Good job, you stupid, fucked up niggger.

Every day that you build this expanded facility, as you fill orders for solar panels to ship around the world, you’re demonstrating that the promise of clean energy isn’t just an article of faith -- not anymore. It’s not some abstract possibility for science fiction movies or a distant future -- 10 years down the road or 20 years down the road. It’s happening right now. The future is here.

Well, I got the solar part wrong, but I knew I remembered something similar:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/14/world ... erals.html
An internal Pentagon memo, for example, states that Afghanistan could become the “Saudi Arabia of lithium,” a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and BlackBerrys.
...and electric cars.

The main raw material is silicon dioxide, found in nature mostly as sand.

so, what the fukk is it that makes them so expensive? that sand must need some heavy duty processing. or maybe it's just that all the processing is done in ivory towers by prevailing wage slobs. or should i say, was.
