Cantaloupe

Post by Goober McTuber »

Right now we are seeing some awesome cantaloupe, nice juicy melons. I like to cube one up and stash it in the fridge, then bust out a bowl and lightly hit it with some salt. Freaking awesome.

We are also getting the best sweet corn in the world right now and keeping it for ourselves.

Some vendor at the local farmers market has been selling 4 or 5 types of melons for the past several weeks. Cantaloupe, some kind of French cantaloupe, a pink honeydew, etc. etc. All very good because they are picked ripe and sold the same day. The cantaloupes we get in the store around here tend to be either overripe or hard and flavorless.

On Saturday, when my bro and his new gf were over I fixed up some carne asada with the usual beans, rice, lettuce, guac, etc. For dessert I cube up some melon from the farmers market along with watermelon, strawberries and raspberries. Served up with some biscotti and coffee it was well received.

I like to make smoothies with melons and whatever other fruit is good at the time. I always add a banana to thicken it. An example of a recent concoction...

Fill the blender about 1/3 or 1/2 with ice cubes and add:
Splash of POM (pomegranate juice)
One cube of frozen lemon juice
One banana
A cup or so of melon cubes
One ripe peach
1/2 cup of raspberries or strawberries

Blend until smooth. You might need a little water to thin it out. This is one awesome drink.
Add some tequila for extra kick.

The Best Sweet Corn in the World is grown excusively on Sauvie's Island, jst north of Portland, in the middle of the Columbia.

Something about the microclimate, soils, and cultivar they use makes it amazing...

and we keep it for ourselves.

World's best? Give me a fucking break.
Seems like there's more than one place that grows good corn.

Customers stalk Fresno State's sweet corn

Thanks, Captain Obvious.

That doesn't really ceate a good atmospere for us to call each other "fucking idiot" and the like, now does it?

I suppose we could take samples and figure out the degrees Brix, which wouldn't indicate taste, but give sugar content (which generally indicates acid conversion, which is usally a good indication of fruit quality).

But since I'm probably the only one here with access to a refractometer to measure sugar content, I guess w'll just have to stick to blind subjectivity and calling each other "fucking idiot"... works for me...

you fucking idiot.

Sugar is not the only factor in corn flavor, you fucking idiots.

There's always the "how fast can you rapid-fire the corn out of your ass" factor.

Yeah, that's what I said, you fucking idiot.

As I also said, it does provide a pretty good indication of how much acid converted to sugar, which in the absence of any direct comparison, is a pretty decent indicator of fruit quality, but certainly not the end-all, be-all.

Which does nothing to dispell the notion that the very best sweet corn is grown up here in God's Country, you fucking idiot.

Corn isn't a fruit or a vegetable, it's a grass (grain).

Corn is a vegetable and so are tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and peas. 'Vegetable' is not a scientific term. It's a culinary term and, since this is the cooking forum, corn is a motherfucking vegetable.
