Kennewick police arrest alleged riding mower thief
By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer
KENNEWICK — A slow getaway on a stolen riding lawn mower landed a Kennewick burglary suspect behind bars.

Nathan Watkins, 31, was found Tuesday morning on Morain Street riding a Toro mower that had been taken from the backyard of a home at 411 S. Morain St., Kennewick police said.

Officers responding to the 8 a.m. burglary call found Watkins on the riding lawn mower pulling a trailer full of other lawn care equipment that was then attached to a second Craftsman riding mower, police said.

Watkins was arrested and booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of second-degree burglary, second-degree theft and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Officers are trying to locate the owners of the stolen property.

Watkins is a convicted bank robber who was sentenced in January 2009 to nearly two years in prison for first-degree theft.

Watkins robbed a Key Bank branch in Richland in October 2008, getting $1,700 in cash after giving the teller a note that said "no dye packs, no bait money," court documents said.

Security video footage showed Watkins wearing a dark sweatshirt with a red devil logo on the back. When Watkins was arrested the next day, he was wearing the same sweatshirt.

I'll be drifting the Clack tomorrow on the quest to whack some of the abundant steelhead, so it's a possibility.

Then again, I was planning on using a boat and personal floatation, which probably reduces my chances at making the U&L Dumbass Hall of Fame (although I'm sure they'll grant me a lifetime achievement award at some point).


We'll be testing the enforcement of that stupid new alcohol ban, I'm sure, which should please Mr. Darwin to no end.
