"Robots" and "The Pacifier" round out the Top 5.

(Click the link in my original post in this thread for this weekend's updated article).

TOP BOX OFFICE (April 3, '05)
1. "Sin City", $28.1 million
2. "Beauty Shop", $13.5 mil
("a spinoff of the 'Barbershop' franchise)- I guess now, any movie
that spawns at least one sequel is considered a 'franchise'.
3. "Guess Who", $13 mil (Last weelend's #1, 10-day total, $41.3 mil)
4. "Robots", $10 mil
5. "Miss Congeniality 2: Armed And Fabulous", $8.4 mil.
Overall, movie revenues slipped for the sixth straight weekend.
The top 12 movies took in $89.3 million, down 14 percent from the same
weekend
last year, when "Hellboy" and "Walking Tall" opened on top of the box office.
At least this week, there's one I'd want to see!
(I've read the review thread for "Sin City").

APR 10 UPDATE:

1. "Sahara" (new release) $18.5 million.
2. "Sin City", $14.1 million (10-day total, $50.7 mil).
3. "Fever Pitch" opened with a so-so $13 million.
It'll be better as a rental later this year, when it doesn't have to compete
against real baseball games. :P
4. "Guess Who", $7.1 mil (cumulative total, $51.1 mil).
Hmmm... in three weeks, it's made barely more than "Sin City" in its second week
of release. Maybe some of the "great unwashed masses" do have some taste after all. :P
5. "Beauty Shop", $7.1 mil (total to date $26.4 mil).
Hollywood's box-office slump continued as overall revenues remained down
for the seventh straight weekend. The top 12 movies took in $80.3 million,
off 18 percent from the same weekend last year.
Perhaps there's a reason for that, one of which is Opening Week of baseball
season, nice weather across much of the country...
or maybe, most of the movies out there just plain stink.

It's updated automatically). :P
With overall revenues down for the eighth straight weekend,
Hollywood is limping into its busy summer season.
The top 12 movies took in $73.9 million, off 13 percent from
the same weekend last year.

The Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy "A Lot Like Love" had a so-so opening
of $7.7 million, coming in at No. 4.

1. "The Interpreter", $22.8 mil.
2. "The Amityville Horror", $14.2 mil (Cumulative Gross $43.8 mil)
3. "Sahara", $9 mil (CG $48.9 nil)

5. "Kung Fu Hustle", $7.3 mil (CG $8 mil)

"Sin City" came in at No. 7 with $3.7 mil, raising its total to $67.3 mil.
"Guess Who" was No. 8 with $3.5 mil, now up to $62.4 mil.
Just so's you remember the flick that started this thread! :P
Overall business was down for the ninth straight week,
with the top 12 movies taking in $83.4 million, off a fraction
from the same weekend last year.
Have no fear, Hollywood! The Sith are coming soon to save the day!

Me and my girlfirend were going to see Interpreter, but it was sold out. So we went to Amityville horror. Complete waste of my money, not scary at all.

MAY 1st UPDATE:
"The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy" thumbed its way to the top of the box office,
debuting at $21.7 million to beat out the explosive "XXX" brand.

Ice Cube's action tale "XXX: State Of The Union" opened a weak third with $13.7 million,
according to studio estimates Sunday.

"XXX" came in behind the previous weekend's top movie, "The Interpreter",
starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn, which slipped to No. 2 with $14.2 million,
lifting its 10-day total to $43.6 million.

Hollywood's pre-summer slump continued, with overall revenues down
for the 10th straight weekend. The top 12 movies grossed $84.8 million,
off 10 percent from the same weekend last year, when "Mean Girls" and "Man On Fire"
ruled the box office.
That's what's missing, no Lindsay Lohan!

1. "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy"- $21.7 mil.
2. "The Interpreter"- $14.2 mil (Cumulative gross $43.6 mil, 2 weeks).
3. "XXX: State Of The Union"- $13.7 mil.
4. "The Amityville Horror"- $8.1 mil (CG $55 mil, 3 weeks).
5. "Sahara"- $6 mil (CG $57.1 mil, 4 weeks).

MAY 8 UPDATE (AP Link via Yahoo! News):
The epic battle tale "Kingdom Of Heaven" fought its way to the top
of the box office, taking in $20 million in its debut week, but the film did little
to boost slumping revenues at the start of the summer movie season.

Hollywood's box office slump continued with revenues down for the 11th straight
weekend compared with the same weekend last year, said Paul Dergarabedian,
president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

The top 12 movies grossed $76.9 million, down 24 percent from last weekend
at this time when "Van Helsing" and "Mean Girls" were the top movies.
Try saying the name "Dergarabedian" five times real fast!

Hopes for ending the slump may end on May 19, when the new "Star Wars" movie opens.

1. "Kingdom Of Heaven", $20 million.
2. "House Of Wax", $12.2 mil.
3. "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy", $9.1 mil (Cumulative Gross, $35.1 mil, 2 weeks).
4. "Crash", $9.1 mil.
5. "The Interpreter, $7.5 mil (CG $54 mil, 3 weeks).

MAY 15 UPDATE:
Moviegoers rewarded Jane Fonda's return to the big screen by making
"Monster-In-Law" the weekend's top movie, though the comedy was short of a monster hit.

Hollywood's box office slump continued for a 12th straight week, but the Force
is expected to return next week when the final chapter in the Star Wars saga-
"Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge Of The Sith"- hits theatres.

"Monster-In-Law", which pits Jennifer Lopez against Fonda as her villianous
prospective mother-in-law, took in $24 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The total box office take was down 6.7 percent from the same weekend last year,
when "Troy" debuted with $46.8 million, but it was up 21.7 percent from last weekend.
1. "Monster-In-Law", $24 million.
2. "Kicking And Screaming", $20.8 mil.
3. "Unleashed", starring Jet Li, $10.6 mil.
4. "Kingdom Of Heaven" (last weekend's #1), $9.6 mil (Cumulative gross $35 mil, 2 weeks).
5. "Crash", $7.2 mil (CG $19.8 mil, 2 weeks).

I may actually go see a movie next weekend... hmmm... what will it be?

Didn't get to Star Wars this weekend, but plenty other folks did.

Despite a record opening for "Revenge Of The Sith", Hollywood's box office slump continued for a 13th straight week.

Revenues were up 67 percent from the previous week, but still off 3.5%
from the same weekend last year.

1. "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith", $108.4 million (Weekend gross),
4-day total of $158.4 million.
2. "Monster-In-Law", $14.35 million (WG), cumulative gross $44.2 mil, 2 weeks.
3. "Kicking And Screaming", $10.7 mil, CG $34.2 mil, 2 weeks.
4. "Crash", $5.5 mil, CG $27.6 mil, 3 weeks.
5. "Unleashed", $4.1 mil, CG $17.85 mil, 2 weeks.

MAY 30 UPDATE:
"Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith" once again ruled the box office,
taking in $70.75 million over Memorial Day weekend,
followed by "Madagascar" and "The Longest Yard", with $61 and $60 million respectively.
Overall receipts were down for a 14th straight week compared with the same weekend
last year, off 5.5 percent from last years' record Memorial Day weekend,
when "Shrek 2" and "The Day After Tomorrow" combined for $181 million
in grosses between them.

This weekend's Top 5:
1. "Star Wars III", $70.75 million (Cumulative gross, $271.2 million, 2 weeks).
2. "Madagascar", $61 mil.
3. "The Longest Yard", $60 mil.
4. "Monster-in-Law", $11 mil (CG $60.7 mil, 3 weeks).
5. "Kicking and Screaming", $6.5 mil (CG $44.2 mil, 3 weeks).

JUNE 5 UPDATE:
"Madagascar" clawed its way to No. 1, taking in $28.7 million in its second weekend.
"Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith" slid to No. 3, but also became
the fastest film to reach the $300 million mark, in its 17th day of release,
beating by one day the record set last year by "Shrek 2".

The weekend's new movies, including "Cinderella Man", and the teenage gal-pal tale
"Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants", didn't make a big splash in their debuts,
contributing to Hollywood's 15th straight weekend of declining revenues.

The top 12 movies grossed $128.3 million, but that was off 30 percent from
the same weekend last year, whe "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"
opened with $93 million.

1. "Madagascar", $28.7 million (Cumulative gross $101 million, 2 weeks).
2. "The Longest Yard", $26.1 mil (CG $95.8 mil, 2 weeks).
3. "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith", $26 mil (CG $308.8 mil, 3 weeks).
4. "Cinderella Man", $18.6 mil.
5. "The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants", $10.2 mil.
(but who but Andy Assmunch would give a damn about that one?) :P

Move up one post and click on the link to see the complete list.
I'm tired of re-posting it every week!

JUNE 12 UPDATE:
Offscreen couple or not, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had enough on-screen chemistry
to lift "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" to a $51 million opening weekend.

The other new releases, "The Honeymooners", "The Adventures of Sharkboy
and Lavagirl In 3-D", and "High Tension" opened weakly, contributing to Hollywood's
16th straight weekend of declining revenues compared to last year,
according to studio estimates Sunday.

The previous weekend's top movie, "Madagascar", slipped to second place
with $17.1 million, raising its total domestic gross to $128.4 million.

TOP 5 TOTE BOARD:
1. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", $51 million.
2. "Madagascar", $17.1 million (Cumulative Gross, $128.3 million, 3 weeks).
3. "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith", $14.85 mil (CG $332.1 mil, 4 weeks).
4. ""The Longest Yard", $13.5 mil (CG $118.1 mil, 3 weeks).
5. "The Adventures Of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D", $12.5 mil.

"Cinderella Man" came in at #6 with a mere $9.5 million, raising its 2-week total
to slightly over $34.5 million.
Ya think Russell Crowe's arrest had anything to do with it? :P

JUNE 19 UPDATE:

"Batman Begins" had a good beginning, debuting as the #1 movie with $48.7 million
over its opening weekend.
Still, the cash registers rang up about 1 percent less business than the same weekend last year,
extending Hollywood's streak to 17 consecutive down weekends.

Overall, the top 12 movies grossed $129.6 million, compared to last years' $130.5 million,
when "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" was top dog.

TOP 5:
1. "Batman Begins", $48.7 million (Cumulative Gross $72.9 million, week to date
since opening last Wednesday)
2. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", $26 mil (CG $96.7 mil, 2 weeks)
3. "Madagascar", $10.7 mil (CG 146.8 mil, 4 weeks)
4. "Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge Of The Sith", $$10 mil (CG $348 mil, 5 weeks)
5. "The Longest Yard", $8.2 mil (CG 132.1 mil, 4 weeks)

I think I'll keep doing the weekly updates 'til the slump is busted! :P

JUNE 24-26 UPDATE:

"Batman Begins" held the top spot for the second straight weekend,
but it could not help Hollywood from sinking to its longest modern box-office slump, now at 18 weeks.
The slump continued despite three major new titles, "Bewitched",
a "Love Bug" update, and "Land Of The Dead".

Guess the dirty ol' men didn't line up in enough numbers for Lindsay Lohan
in the "Herbie" movie!

TOP 5:

1. "Batman Begins", $27.6 million (Cumulative Gross $122.5 million, 2 weeks).
2. "Bewitched", $20.1 mil (1 week).
3. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", $16.8 mil (CG $125.5 mil, 3 weeks).
4. "Herbie: Fully Loaded", $12.7 mil (CG $17.7 mil since opening last Wednesday).
5. "George A. Romero's Land Of The Dead", $10.2 mil.

JULY 2-4 UPDATE:

Tom Cruise may have bagged Katie Holmes, and have the #1 movie,
but it wasn't enough to stop Hollywood's box office slump, now at 19 weeks.
The alien-invasion movie took in $77.6 million over the holiday weekend,
making it the second-best opening over the Fourth of July weekend
behind $115.8 million for "Spider-Man 2".

The weekend's other wide release, the Martin Lawrence comedy "Rebound",
fouled out with just $6 million from Friday to Monday, coming in at No. 7.

TOP 5:
1. "War Of The Worlds", $77.6 million (Cumulative Gross $113.2 million since opening last Wednesday).
2. "Batman Begins", $18.7 mil (CG $154.1 mil, 3 weeks).
3. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", $12.7 mil (CG $146 mil, 4 weeks).
4. "Bewitched", $10.8 mil (CG $40.3 mil, 2 weeks).
5. "Herbie: Fully Loaded", $10.5 mil (CG $36.8 mil, 2 weeks).

Next up on the "Silver Screen Slumpbuster Sweepstakes": "The Fantastic Four".
At the store Monday, I saw that the new TV Guide has one of those multiple-cover deals
with "F. F." characters on it.
Strangely enough, I didn't see any with Jessica Alba as 'The Invisible Girl' on it!

JULY 8-10 UPDATE:
THE SLUMP IS OVER!

"Fantastic Four" raked in $56 million in its opening weekend, ending Hollywood's
losing streak at 19.
The top 12 films took in $141 million, up 2.25 percent from the same weekend in '04,
according to Sunday's industry estimates.

TOP 5:
1. "Fantastic Four", $56 million.
2. "War Of The Worlds", $31.3 million (Cumulative Gross $165.8 mil, 2 weeks).
3. "Batman Begins", $10.2 mil (CG $172.1 mil, 4 weeks).
4. ""Dark Water", $10.1 mil.
5. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", $7.85 mil (CG $158.6 mil, 5 weeks).

'BODE Jessica Alba, for doing what Lindsay Lohan couldn't, helping to end the slump!
(That's one helluva bust... errr, slump-buster!)
