PET Lefty's first Triathlon

Post by Left Seater »

As many of you know I challenged .m2blue to a Triathlon. I proposed that if he won I would purchase season tickets to Cal for him and if I won he would send me windchimes. As usual he couldn't sack up and resorted to calling me fat. I went ahead and completed the challenge this past weekend. I have been swimming for years and have competed in both pool and open water events for a number of years. I don't cycle and I don't run. Three knee operations make running very uncomfortable.

That said my wife has decided to use her company's sponsorship dollars in support of healthy events. As such they were the title sponsor for this event and I decided this was the event for me to try. Here are a few photos, not many as I was participating and my wife was working.

300M swim, 10 Mile Bike, 3 Mile run. I was in the top 15 out of the water, top 30 after the bike and finished near the bottom of my age group. Swim to bike transition was top 30, while bike to run transition was top 10. Granted I didn't change shoes on the second transition so that really helped me, as many others had to change shoes. Thanks to Rack Fu for the help and suggestions. I wouldn't have done as well without his coaching. All in all a great experience and I will do another.

First time I ever wore one of these, prolly last.

Good going, LS.

I couldn't do one of those tris. Run and bike, sure. But swim? More like sink.

Funny you would be the first to post .m2blue.

So are you bringing my chimes to the Texas RennFaire? I believe it is not too far from Houston.

Lefty, I've been running quite a bit of late - I'll be in a half-marathon on Nov. 1st. Regarding one of your comments, in a race there's always lots of people worse than you and lots of folks better.

A couple of weeks ago, I was finishing up a 5k, feeling happy about my time...when a 8 year old boy blew right past me and sprinted over the finish line. The kid wasn't even breathing hard.

i've run a few marathongs. nothing like an 80-year-old crippled lady sprinting past you at the 23 mile mark. that's when i ran a sub-4:00.

Rack the tri, Lefty. I could probably do it, but don't have the proper motivation. And as always, racks for marrying up.

mJew needs to spend some time in a hot box...sayin'.

Well done Lefty!

So where was m2 in the pics anyway? Was he way ahead of you? My guess is that the tights and curly toed shoes worked well in the water, reducing drag and acting as flippers. The bike was tough but the instant protein boost of the giant turkey drumstick got him through which led to the run. Walking around for 20 years in that chain mail suit is like swinging a lead pipe in the on-deck circle. Feeling so much lighter the run was a breeze. So come clean Lefty, how bad did m2 beat you?

Nice job Lefty! I have a few neighbors doing the big 70 mile deal this weekend. I have a client who did the Iron Man.....3 times. Brutal. I did the same one you did in College and it was a blast. I could not do it now. The bike would kill me.

Major Props for the accomplishment!

props on your wife earning the top spot in a Rankem'. Well done.
Well, Lefty's better half is a hottie, but winning that rank'em is like Kobayashi going up against the Nicole Richie's and Karen Carpenter's of the world.

Well when folks are running in the Detriot Marathon and they're dropping in Baltimore, I'd say they best shorten the damn thing a bit. :P

Anyway great job Lefty and props on what looked like a goodtime...uhh...25 years ago.
Props to the MIsses and her team as well.

I'm glad whatever little advice that I gave helped. I must publicly thank Lefty (and his better half) for offering me one of the sponsorship slots for the sold out event. I really do appreciate the invite even though I was going to be out of town and couldn't participate. That was classy.

Props for competing. Running on bad knees isn't a joy at all. The more I got into running (and ran properly with some good shoes) the better my knees felt.

Be careful. Those triathlons are addicting. I went from doing a couple of events with some co-workers last year to going nuts this year. Next thing you know you will go from riding your old crappy hybrid bike to an entry level triathlon bike...

I'm going to train like a madman in the offseason and race two or three Ironman 70.3 events next year. Not sure I'd ever want to torture myself with a full Ironman. That's an awful long swim, bike and run. Not sure my body could handle the training nor do I believe I have the time to dedicate towards it. I move into the 40-44 age group in 2010 and I'd like to put in some top 15 times.

Props! That is outstanding and certainly better than I could do as I type this. Kinda makes a guy want to train a little and do something like that once! Props again, Lefty!
