Trade Deadline '09

Post by Shoalzie »

Tuesday is fast approaching...a few moves in the last 10 days of note including a new one today:

Last Monday, Mathieu Schneider was sent back to Montreal with a draft pick in exchange for 2 picks

Friday, Ottawa picks up Mike Comrie and Chris Campoli for Dean McAmmond and a 2009 1st round pick

Today, the Ducks' potential fire sale is underway with Chris Kunitz and a prospect being dealt to Pittsburgh for Ryan Whitney.

The Ducks are an interesting team right now to follow leading into Tuesday. They're in the big heap of teams fighting for a playoff spot...part of group of 4 teams tied for 7th in the West. However, they have 9 unrestricted free agents going into the summer. They look a lot like the Penguins last year where they had a lot of free agents but it appears the Ducks are looking to sell instead of make a big move improve their team for this year. Kunitz was signed for another 3 years at less salary than Whitney but they've already got Perry and Getzlaf signed long term plus they'll need to lock up Ryan soon as well. They don't really have a defenseman signed of any significance signed beyond next year. The next name that could be moved may be Chris Pronger, who has just one year left on his deal.

The Caps need a defenseman, any defenseman.

The Stars feel they don't have enough slug forwards so they add another on...they acquire Steve Begin from the Canadiens.

Speaking of which...

The Bruins covet Scott Niedermayer. He'd just be a late season rental so the asking price would be substantially less than Pronger's. The fact that he's the team's captain and he only signed with the Ducks to play alongside his brother are not really talked about around town. I think they're important points that wiill prevent him from coming here. It's not like he needs the hardware... I think he's the only player to take home every major North American and international championship in his career. We shall see.

The Bruins are also in the market for a left winger as they've never really been able to replace Sturm. Tkachuk's name has been tossed about. I wouldn't mind getting Eric Cole. He's having a shitty season in Edmonton and could be had at a reduced price.

I forgot, the league did move the deadline back a day. The deadline is on a Wednesday this year...not the usual Tuesday.

You can almost consider this as a deadline pickup but check out Brodeur in his first game back from injury...he blanks the Avs last night. The Devils were very good with Clemmensen in goal but now you bring back the best goalie in the world and they become even more of a contender out East. I think the Devils are the second best team in the East to Boston simply because of Brodeur.

Chris Pronger and Travis Moen to Boston...not official but supposedly both teams have agreed in principle according to this guy's report

Good grief that one is true...

EDIT--Nothing has happened yet.

First deal of the day...

Ottawa gets: Pascal Leclaire, 2nd Round Pick
Columbus gets: Antoine Vermette

Mason's play and potential made Leclaire expendable...much like Leclaire made Marc Denis expendable.

First big move of the day...

Calgary gets: Olli Jokinen, 3rd Round Pick
Phoenix gets: Matthew Lombardi, Brandon Prust, 1st Round Pick

The Flames finally get their top line center and they made a nice pickup with Leopold. Calgary is definitely the winner today so far.
