Trouble in paradise?

NASCAR may be struggling to put 43 cars on the track every week. I blame Bush. George, not Kyle or Kletus.

Some fans wonder whether Cup will have 43-car fields for every event next year. Does it really matter? The truth is 43 cars are more than you need to have a quality event.
43 cars
are too many. Half of them can't compete as is. Time to streamline.

At the rate things are going, the only teams left will be Toyota teams. Seriously, how can GM and Ford justify sinking money into NASCAR teams for cars that will never see showroom floor ever? Who knows, maybe an unintended fringe benefit of this economic colapse will be the return of real Stock Car racing.

Toyota may not be as bad off as the Big 3, but their sales are down as well. Their management may re-think participating in NASCAR as well.

i would say all manufacturers are in trouble that participate in racing, not just NASCAR.
Honda pulled out of F1, and even Ferrari is cutting back

LONDON, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Toyota have scaled back the launch of their 2009 Formula One car as part of cost-cutting measures.
"To emphasise its commitment to overall cost reduction in Formula One, the team will not proceed with its traditional pre-season event programme," Toyota said in a statement on Wednesday.
Instead of a formal launch at the team's Cologne factory, with reporters and company officials flown in from around the world, studio images of the new TF109 car will be unveiled through the internet on Jan. 15.
Toyota said the car would begin testing on Jan. 20 at the new Algarve circuit in southern Portugal.
The world's biggest car maker has spent billions of dollars in Formula One since the team's debut in 2002 but is suffering along with other manufacturers from slumping global sales due to the economic recession.
Toyota Motor Corp. had its top-notch credit ratings cut for the first time in a decade on Wednesday, hitting its shares and raising borrowing costs.

It wouldn't be NASCAR w/o GM and Ford and if you think fans are going to pay big bucks to go watch an all Toyota race, you're crazy.
GM and Ford can't afford
not to sink money into NASCAR. It's the best advertising they get.

And it's not just the car makers themselves. Think of Goodyear and all the other automotive suppliers intricately tied into the sport.
