Interesting that this thread got bumped back up. Was flashing back a bit this weekend with these five...

Been a long time since I had played any of them. Zevon was a killer live, as "Stand in the Fire" demonstrates. And "Excitable Boy" and "The Envoy" are as brilliant today as they were then.

Got some new wheels a few weeks ago, and I have a 6 month (or something) free subscription to Sirius XM.

I'm now experiencing a personal Dead renaissance on long drives.
3 1/2 hours each way to Mojave, 2 hours each way to Apple Valley in the past two weeks and I'm in fucking Dead heaven. The complete live shows they play are blowing me away. There was one from early May in 1973, I think, in Atlanta that's as good as anything I've ever heard anywhere by anybody.

I've heard three of four different live versions of Deal that I had never heard before, and it just brings tears to my eyes. Oh yeah, and Sugaree...and He's Gone...and Tennessee Jed...and Jack Straw.

OK, I switch to BB King Bluesville once in awhile, but Dead most of the way.

I've been a continuous subscriber for about 10 years now. Although I'm still in it for the game (sports), it certainly has broadened my musical horizons.

One of the things I seem to catch every year is that I'll be working a Saturday morning while The Open ( British Open) is being played and I get to hear the limey feed.

Two music stations I mainly switch back and forth between-

Lithium ( which I switch off when the Beastie Boys are played)

and

Ozzy's Boneyard ( which I switch off when Rush is played)

VU: hilltop festival stuff. VU changed my life the instant i saw my yamaha turntable tone arm drop into "i can't stand it".

everything was different.

husker du: candy apple grey. i don't know, i've gone some 80's this week. the huskers major label debut was a lot better than other "college" or "indie" bands of the era. imo. i love the grant hart tunes on this one.

No apologies for liking Big Star, especially # 1 Record.

Been a big Alex Chilton fan for a long time. Songs like "Thirteen" and "Ballad of El Goodo" and "Back of a Car" from Radio City are great pop classics. The record suffered from hideous distribution, but it and Chilton, as well as Chris Bell inspired lots of music and artists.

also been rocking the first "disc" of the fugazi retrospective....whatever that's called. a friend gave it to me....i saw Fu at Denver's Gothic Theatre....it was stupid great. free show with a can of food. wasn't a huge Fu or minor threat fan but they rocked. that same summer i saw the Pixies and Sonic Youth....at the Gothic. funny to say now, but all thought all those bands were past their prime at the shows.....and i'm 40 years be talking like that means something. i guess i coud be listening to Beiber, shit new country, or the Eagles....

i love Big Star, outside the Beatles Help! or White Album side 3 i doubt i've listened to more music than Big Star. don't know why.

I have been listening to the first two Korn albums quite a bit lately now that Head is back in the band...they should be getting back to that more old school really heavy down tuned sound now...even though I like/d Silveria (former drummer) Ray Luzier is a fucking beast and adds a new dimension to their sound.

Going to see Boz Scaggs in a couple of weeks so I went and bought his new CD Memphis.

This is really a pretty amazing album. He went to Memphis and recorded some originals plus some classic R&B material at the late Willie Mitchell's Royal Studio, using the Memphis Horns and Ray Parker Jr. on guitar, among others. Great arrangements, great playing and above all Boz. Dude just turned 69 and he can still hit all the notes with a voice like silk. Some of these songs sound like he's channeling Al Green.

He made a few albums between leaving the Steve Miller band and when he hooked up with the future Toto to make mega-hits that were actually very good. These two got a lot of time on my turntable in my teenage years and later.
