28 days.....

Has it really been only 28 days since Lloyd Carr stepped down as UM's HC? Dammit, with all the finger pointing and angst among those who support the Wolverines and the endless speculations and rumors around the media and internet it felt like an eternity. In the end Bill Martin, the guy in charge of the University's biggest hire in 40 years landed a big one. Many things still have to shake out, but in the presser RR said he's brought along his OC and his director of recruiting. I'm anxious to hear who will run his defense. English would not be a bad choice, but some unknown by me defensive savant would really excite me.
Ryan Mallet. Should he decide to stay, I believe that RR can work his system to Mallets strengths. As many have said on here Mallet ran the spread in HS. Nobody is crazy enough to view Mallet in the role of Pat White, but Mallet is/will be a much better passer than White. C.Brown and K.Grady will be very important, they have the speed needed and UM is still loaded at WR even if Manningham decides to go play on Sundays.
What I like about the hire is that in RR we've got a young guy who can inject some youth and vision into the program. We've got a guy in place that if all goes well, will be there for 10+ years, we like stability at Michigan. We've got a guy with great enthusiasm and energy. No offense to Lloyd, as RR is damn near 20 years younger. Rodriguez is a solid recruiter and said to be an excellent judge of talent. Have there been some questionable character guys around the WVU program, sure. But just about every school has a few. I'm more interested in how he handles disciplinary opportunities. I think Lloyd handled most cases right. He' suspended several guys in recent years, and booted a few as well. I think RR will handle things along the same lines. Ann Arbor is not a place where lack of institutional control will be tolerated.
I can't wait for Rodriguez to get into the culture of Michigan Football. I expect him to become a fixture at UM Hoops games in support of his friend Bielein. Do I expect him to make a speech calling his shot against OSU next year? Nope. It's been done, and very well I might add by the Vest. He may grab the mic at some point and whip the maize rage into a frenzy, that would be sweet.
Looking back on the search I wonder how different things might have been if WVU had beaten Pitt. LSU would not have made the MNC game, and more than likely Les Miles would be UM's coach. Now most likely Miles never will return home to coach the school he loves. UM gets a guy who leaves the school he went to, played at, coached at, met his wife at.... kinda strange. He was what Miles would have been in AA. Let Sciano go to PSU in 10 years or so (more like 3, but I kid) his heart was in Jersey (whoda thunk). Ferentz was never an option, the UM guys on here were all correct, his courtship was done as a courtesy to Carr. No offense Iowa guys, he's all yours. Martin finally had a grasp of what he had to offer, a top notch job. He used his power to get a guy that nobody thought anyone could get...Rack him for that! Hoke, DeBord, English, Kelley, whoever else...mere window dressing. In the end Martin hauled in a huge name, proven winner, innovative offensive mind, one of the top coaches in the land. What the hell were we so worried about?
Go Blue!

I loved the way ESPN continually showed clips of RR’s pained expressions from the Pitt game. Should see a lot more of that when he faces the Badgers or the Buckeyes.

Traditionally, it's been extremely hard to tempt top defensive talent to WVU. Folks like to berate RR's defenses, but other staffs have recognized his innovative defensive approaches, and they've been sending their assistants there to learn in recent years. With much better defensive talent at his disposal, look out.
I'm officially jealous, UM fan. You guys are headed confidently into the 21st century, while our program is still skeptical of the innovations of the 20th.

To be clear, WVU's defense was ranked 4th (or so) in the country.

If you compare Rodriguez and Miles, I think Miles is the safer choice for UofM. Rodriguez has more upside, but with that comes a bigger downside as well. I think Rodriguez could take them to a higher level than Miles could, but he can also take them to a lower level because he is changing the entire offensive and defensive philosophy that has been in place for damn near 40 years.

Yeah, lucky for Rodriguez he doesn't have to coach against Dave Wannstedt anymore.

Rack. He needs to save that look for November.

Look at buckeye fan trying to downplay the great hire.
First off, the guy did pretty well at a tier 2 football school.
If he gets Pryor to goto UM, watch out.
We all know that OSU/Tressel can't defend the spread.
Keep talking OSU fan. Those years of winning are very cyclical. New hire, new results.
Sucks to be you guys. I see a DOWNturn in that series for you. Disagree? Time will tell.....time will tell....

Hey - PSU ended up 9th, I think. Stats are...stats. PSU had a nice statistical year against the Florida Internationals of the world...but appeared to take a big step back defensively against decent teams. No top 10 defense surrenders a 17 point lead and lets MSU walk up and down the field on them. If it weren't for Mo Evans (a tremendous DL prospect), PSU would have lost to IU, because of an absolutely porous defense.
WVU might look good stats-wise...but they had some rough weeknights (yes, that's Big East ESPN Weeknight smack) on the defensive side of the ball. WVU had an awful night offensively against Pitt, and they ended up losing. I'd be hesitant to conclude that RR is a bad coach as a result.
As for changing UM's traditional offensive approach...not to speak for UM fan, but isn't it past time to do that already?

The TV ratings for those games have shown that they are working well for the Big East.

As there could a downturn with Meyer to huh Rex? But the way you think no way right? Meyer is god...
I embrace the RR hire...give Tressel and OSU some competition...so what if he gets pryor...spread coming to the Big 10 great...Tiller has been running a version of it albeit with less talented players than a UM but hey bring it on...teams evolve Rex...I mean when Tressel got to OSU he played Tressel ball...defense, special teams, and running the ball, he evolved over the last few years and played more of a spread offense with the weapons...
plus I believe back in the 2002 title game Miami spread the field on occasion and we defended well then came back and played a team KSU in the Fiesta bowl with a mobile QB and a great RB and beat them down...so don't act like OSU has never defended a spread type team or mobile QB...
as you have said things run in cycles...maybe OSU gets another year or two until RR gets his system and players into UM...but until he actually fields a UM team and wins a meaningful Big 10 game...yep OSU fan can talk trash...I mean he just came off losing to a TWENTY FUCKING EIGHT POINT UNDERDOG on his home turf...

My heart really wasn't in it anyway. I agree that the weeknight games were a great move. If you can avoid competing for air time on a Saturday...why not do it? I certainly got a lot of eyes on the Big East that otherwise would never have seen their games.

Big Ten teams, under various head coaches, have run spread offenses. It isn't anything brand new to the Big Ten.
How do you people think Northwestern scores 70 billion points a game, but still sucks arse?

by buckeye_in_sc
yeah but based on 2 games OSU can't defend it...I mean that is such a great sample size...
all statistics should be based on a sample size of 2...

Because they haven't done well against Purdue? Northwestern? Even in their loss to Illinois, their defense played well, it was their offense that self destructed.
Could be a great hire, could blow up in their face. As always, most of us will let it play out a bit before passing judgment.

there you go again with logic Killian
I seem to remember that after the First TD by ILL...tOSU forced like 4 or 5 straight 3 and outs...
but hey apparently UF can't defend a conventional offense this year...see Auburn, LSU, and UGA...

Absolutely. When you don't have to compete with the Big 10/Pac 10/Big 12/Meatgrinder for viewers, it's probably going to work out better. I know I generally watch the Big East when it’s the only game on TV.

Sucks to be us? WTF are you talking about? We just beat those A-holes four years in a row. Until new guy proves himself on the elite level, I see no proof that things will change in the coming years.
Michigan may have just fired their Earle Bruce-equivalent and hired their very own John Cooper for all we know.

I'm sorry...the spread OPTION!!!!!! Not that shitty ass passing spread a la fancied up run and shoot.
Also, that's what I am talking about...OSU fan thinks they'll never lose again to Michigan.
HA!
What's the saying; double the pride, twice the fall.
Fuck, OSU will have to get over getting their asses beat twice in back-to-back title games.
THAT is going to suck much worse.

UofM has no one on their roster who can run the spread option, so you can throw that out the window right now. And if they do get Pryor, I doubt he will be starting as a Frosh.
Didn't KSU run some version of the spread option in 2003?

for someone who gave his team no chance last year against tOSU...nice reversal...
also I usually casually cheer for Michigan during bowl season just because I want the Big 10 do to well...but for this Cap One BOWL...GO MOTHER FUCKING BLUE...
no OSU fan has said they will never lose again to Michigan...from what I have read...all we are saying is for RR to prove himself in the Big 10 against PSU, MSU, Wisconsin, and OSU...if he beats OSU...fine...
but my how you can call out OSU fan for having the glasses on when you are the king of Orange and Blue glasses...you think Meyer will never lose a game every next year when the defense is a year older...
so is UF in a downturn if they lose the bowl game and finish with 4 losses...?

Not directly, but indirectly you did. And don't deny it. The "we all know Tressel/OSU can't defend the spread" as a reference to the UF game.

No Rex it was just how you call out every other fan for this same shit...but yet you whine when people call you out for the same shit...
again you are basing your argument on 2 games...ILL this year and the UF game...
in 2005 OSU played Texas and PSU...they lost both of those games by combined 10 points...Texas ran a version of the read option with VY...OSU was beating them and lost on a fucking awesome play toward the end of the game...by 3 fucking points...then they lost to UF in which they clearly were not prepared...and ILL...wow...if only many other coaches could only claim what 4 losses over the last 3 years...of which 2 of them were to National Champions and a Orange Bowl winning team...yep OSU is on a down turn...
again...I suppose UF is on a down turn since you know they lost 3 games this year and are having trouble with conventional offenses...
Fuck RR...FUCK Michigan (in every case but 2)...he needs to come in and win some games at UM before you can start spouting off that OSU is done, etc...

I don't think Michigan fans need other schools talking shit for them.
I have no idea what Rodriguez can do against Utah, let alone Ohio State. I will talk shit about Rodriguez and Ohio State the second after Michigan beats the Suckeyes. In the mean time, I am going to enjoy this transition, watch the recruiting boards and excitiedly way for the season to Start.

Interesting that after you were called out on that stupid fucking comment, you had to ammed it to "spread option", which again was shot to shit.
