GOOOOO Big John!!!

Post by Dinsdale »

Share of the lead. It won't last, and he'll put on a meltdown for the ages... but until he does, I'll continue to root for the People's Champion.

I thought I heard on the radio that he averaged 340+ off the tee yesterday. Dang. If you can actually keep those in the fairway or the first cut, you're doing alright.

Yep, 345.

The crowd absolutely loved the guy, who didn't even play a practice round. Dude was playing slots at the nearby Cherokee Casino two days before the tournament started.

As I understand it, the average driving distance each week is based on two holes, one on the front and one on the back. I wouldn't place too much stock on those numbers, as whatever hole the PGA chooses to measure may favor one player's game over another.

They are generally holes where most would hit driver......straightaway par 5's and the like. Of course, certain players may not hit driver skewing the number a bit..but by and large it's a reasonable assessment of who's hitting the ball far.

I agree that it’s a reasonable way to measure one player against another, but if it’s downhill with a prevailing tailwind, the actual number may not be indicative of how far that player is actually hitting it off of the other tees. That’s what I meant to say had I not been drinking so heavily.

With modern clubs and balls, 345 sounds about right for Big John, if he's not too liquored up.

Considering that he came damn close to knocking one over the Niagara River Gorge (342 yards) on the fly, I'd say that 345 is about spot on for Daly. Especially since it was 100 degrees out there. However, I'm guessing that one of the worst jobs on Tour has to be the one held by the Shot Link guy who has to track down Daly's errant drives.

I remember seeing an interview with Lefty in the last couple of years, in which he said that everything changes distance-wise when it gets to about 95. This is pretty consistant with what I've observed on the course, as well. When the ball gets hot, it compresses more, in addition to it generally hitting less air molecules as it flies through hot air(depending on other factors as well, of course). Everyone is bombing them 300+ when it's 100 out. Everyone I play with, anyhoo.
