No Lust For Life

But then again, they wouldn't play it, since it's not a Stooges tune.

Saw Iggy & The Stooges (w/ Mike Watt on bass) tonight at the 9:30 Club, classically initiating my 13-yr-old son into the ways of the mosh. We were about 10' from the stage, getting to within about five feet during the encore. Much tightly packed humanity, I must say. Great show, though. Iggy can act the part of a 19-yr-old as well as any 60-yr-old. And while the elf's theme song wasn't on the set list, Stooges classics such as 1969, Real Cool Time, Funhouse, Skull Ring, No Fun, Not Right, and, of course, I Wanna Be Your Dog, were, with the last one played twice (third song of the set, and also the last). They also played My Idea of Fun and what should be this board's theme song, Trolling. Hard for me to admit, but I may be gettin' a little old for that kinda shit. Offhand, I can't think of a band that's still performing that would make me wanna put up with the elbows, hip checks, and other positioning techniques required of such an event. But to see Iggy, and to educate the boy, it was well worth it, especially since I was able to score the tix at face value outside the club as the doors were opening.

Definitely a Real Cool Time tonight.

Yeah, one would think that gettin' tix for a haggard, washed up ol' punk should be cheap & easy ('sup, Cinder?). But the show sold out within about ten minutes, and ducats were bein' resold online for triple their face value. I'm guessing it's pretty much the same story wherever he's booked on this tour. Being the tight-fisted bastard I am, there's no fuggin' way I would pony up that kinda scratch. So yeah, I guess this is 1990. Or maybe even 1969, OK.

I genuinely liked brick by brick. I'm not sure what he's done since.

The dude was definitely born to rock, though...

Shat all over the Stooges good name, is what he's done. The new record is unlistenable. It's good to hear the live shows still have the same "raw power", but they need to stay away from the studio.

you must be taking lessons at the XXL school of posting. This effort gets a B. It satisfies the basic criteria of an XXL reply except that it's missing the crucial ellipses. Your reply should read:

I absolutely love Mike Watt. Got enthused to hear he was going to be on the Stooges album. Then I heard the album. Not down. I guess I'm an old man, or don't buy the old Iggy acting like a 19 year old act.

Good on Smackie for giving his lad decent brag ammunition in 5 years time. First gigs are too important to be left in the hands of the young, and it wasn't fucking Rush.

not a stooges tune. it's on Iggy's Lust for Life LP, IIRC.

For the sake of full disclosure, I must admit this wasn't the youngun's first concert to which I've taken him. At the risk of incurring the wrath of some of the more snobbish music critics in our midst, I took him to see Smashing Pumpkins about five years ago. He seems not to have been too scarred by it, though. All I can really say in my defence is at least it wasn't fucking Rush. Or Boston.

You sound like my older son. Listening to him, you'd swear he worships at the Temple of Watt.

I took my kids to see Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Not rock music, but they did seem to enjoy it.

My own first show was Sly and the Family Stone. He showed up 45 minutes late, but was still great.

('sup Nish)

(Actually my parents took me to see Louis Armstrong when I was real young. He was already pretty old by then.)
