my last smoke.....amazing how much better I feel, how much better I can breathe, how much more energy I have, how much better I can smell, and how much better food tastes in just that short amount of time.....can't wait to see how much better it'll get...

had I known then what I know now, I would have quit years ago.....motivation (I want to see my granddaughter grow up) is an amazing thing.....

once you set your mind to it, it's really pretty easy.....

to all those who are still partaking, believe me when I tell you that if I can do it, anybody can.....

3 1/2 years for me and I still want one almost everyday.

Rack you for joining the quitters club, just don't become one of those obnoxious ones. I still hate preachy ex-smokers.

I'm almost at a year without a smoke and I don't miss it one bit. The Old Lady quit same time, so that made it easier.

And TWIS is right, no matter how much I hate the smell now, I'll never be a big douche about it. I just can't believe I was part of that crowd for almost 20 years.

So a big hearty rack to ya, Felix, errr I mean grandpa!

Almost up to a year in having kicked a Can O' Kodiak a day here.

Can O' Kodiak = 3 Packs of Smokes in terms of nicotine quantity.

Out of habit I still notice I hang on to an empty soda bottle or coffee cup and then look at it a few minutes later wondering "Why the hell am I keeping that, I dont' dip anymore".

If I could do it moderately, I would.

Oh and RACK you Felix

Too bad it hasn't reached the point where you can honestly say, "how much better I post."
can't wait to see how much better it'll get...
Neither can we.

RACK you, Felix.

I quit a pack a day habit in 1998 because I knew at some point I'd want to have kids and decided I wanted to be alive to see them grow up. Best decision I ever made.

BTW, one of the things that I did that really helped me a lot was finding ways to exercise. Not only did it help get rid of all of the shit in my lungs, but the healthier I got, the more I knew it would tear my lungs up if I went back to smoking. I started out by just doing long walks and ended up playing racquetball for an hour twice a week after about a month of the walks. Naturally, I about died at first, but quickly got into great shape.

Good luck, bro.

RACK the quitters.

It's been almost 18 years for me. The day I found out my wife was pregnant with our first kid. RF is right about the motivation. As soon as you REALLY decide you want to quit it's easy.

From age 14 to age 24, I was a Camel smoker.

It's been 12 years since I smoked, and I'll never do it again.

When I started smoking, they were $1.25 a pack. $2.75 was the state minimum when I quit.

What do they cost now?

I've been smoke free for the last... um, my entire life.

Fucking morons. I guess it must be good shit to make people spend their money to one day die an agonizing and early death. All the while smelling like a turd and looking like a complete asshole doing it.

Props to those that quit. Better late than never.

I smoked every single brand there is out there for 15 years starting when I was 17...

then I stopped playing in bars, or actually smoking IN bars got banned.

However I expect to get slammed with a second hand smoke cancer issue in oh about 30 years or so, IF I'm lucky.

I think I hated the unfiltered cigs the most. Made it so much harder to sing in the last set. goddamn Euros were like chimneys. Light, smoke, light, smoke like they couldn't wait to finish the first pack so they could mow through the second to get to the third.

On the plus side my out of pocket costs for smoking were very low.

I smoked Camel Lights. I'd smoke regular Camel Filters or Marlboro Reds here and there, but they always tore my lungs up too much and Marlboro Lights were like smoking a piece of rolled binder papers, so CL's it was.

I would have thought Cali would have taxed the fuck out of smokes by now. Here in WNY they go for 4.50 to 6.50 depending on exactly where you are.

$4.90 around here since an additonal $1.00/pack tax went into effect yesterday. I'm not sure how much Skoal will cost me now but I'm going to find out in a few minutes. Why do they have to tax all of my vices? Damn, can't a fella have any fun these days without paying an arm and a leg for it? The new tax revenue is supposed to be used for health care (at least that's how the politicians sold it to the public)....hehehe.....tell me anyone really believes that one.

Mace

Since Cali taxed hard first we have got the "addiction adjustment" simply because of this states massive sales volume and even though we taxed the fuck outta of smokes, chew or booze, they just adjusted prices elsewhere to make their investors happy.

Here in NY they not only tax the fuck out of smokes, but we have a MINIMUM price for which retailers can sell cigarettes. And if you go to New York City, they've added a 2 dollar a pack City of New York sin tax on top of that. I give it twenty years before the sale of tobacco related products is made illegal in New York.

smokes on their "nation" land ??
also---any current or recent military guys;
do they still sell cigarettes etc. at the post/base
exchanges ??
It is odd to drop into a place like "JR World" in
North Carolina and see cartons for sale around $13 !!

They still have their gas stations/cigarette outposts. But the Oneida station in Verona I pass by on semi annual trips to Vermont is barely competitive with the Thruway stations in pricing for gas. Honestly, I haven't bought a pack of smokes there in years, so I can't remember. I hear the places out near Buffalo are still fighting the good fight. Their latest gimmick to get around NY State taxes is to sell "Native American" cigarettes. I guess they must buy the tobacco elsewhere and then roll and pack the smokes onsite. They sell for 15 bucks a carton and, so I am told, taste like shit*.

I give it about another 5 years before the state completely clamps down on the Indians. By then they'll be making so much money on their casinos, they'll forget all about the lost business at their smoke shops.

*Or, for you anti-smoking Nazis, even more like shit than regular cigarettes. OK, you happy now Meds? How's your insurance premiums?

I can't speak for anyone elses reason for starting to smoke, but I can guess there would be some familiar ones listed. Parents who smoke, older siblings or other relatives who did, curiosity, peer pressure, etc are probably the more popular ones. People do stupid things Fu, it's a part of life. We can come up with a list of stupid decisions that everyone would agree on, smoking is certainly one of them, buying a $49K SUV that's 2WD is another, the list can go on and on ...

Truth be told, that was precisely the reason I never started. I can remember as a kid, being nauseated at the dinner table to the point I couldn't eat (anyone who knows me now would find that very hard to believe) while my parents chain-smoked.

Then my father had a near-fatal heart attack when I was 7 and he was only 34. I was told that smoking was a major contributor to that. Right then and there I vowed never to smoke. I kept that promise.

Day 50 for me. Down to the wicked impulse maybe once or twice a day and only a brief moment. Rarely really even think about it any more.

Didn't have any special reasons to write Oprah for or anything just wanted to see if I could do it.

Just 4 me!! ...and my wife, of course.

Oh, and Dins, don't quit. 1. 10-20 lb weight gain is inevitable. We would ALL hate to see that happen to your self of steam. 2. You can taste and smell shit you hadn't tasted or smelt in years. Based on the stories of where you nostrils and tongue have been....just don't quit dude. You'll thank me later...

Sad part is, I could gain 20-30 pounds, and still be right up there with the most fit people on this board.

Dins don't gain weight. He does, however, refer to himself in the third person...because that is how Dins rolls.

Because Dins is epic like that.
