I know, I know, next to Foggy Mountain Breakdown all other songs pale, but here's my choice for the best, at least in the pop category.

There She Goes - The La's

Ok, who stole UF's password? It is probably one of those goofy fuckers from the .net just messing around.

BSmack's favorite song today...

The Decemberists- The Bagman's Gambit

We'll see about tomorrow.

On the lam from the law
on the steps of the capitol
you shot a plainclothes cop on the ten o'clock
and I saw momentarily
they flashed a photograph, it couldn't be you
you'd been abused so horribly
but you were there in some anonymous room
and I recall that fall
I was working for the government
and in a bathroom stall off the National Mall
how we kissed so sweetly
how could I refuse a favor or two
for a tryst in the greenery
I gave you documents and microfilm, too

And from my ten floor tenement
where once our bodies lay
how I long to hear you say
no, they'll never catch me now
no, they'll never catch me
no, they cannot catch me now
we will escape somehow
somehow

It was late one night
I was awoken by the telephone
I heard a strangled cry on the end of the line
purloined in Petrograd
they were suspicious of where your loyalties lay
so I paid off a bureaucrat
to convince your captors they're to secret you away

And at the gate of the embassy
our hands met through the bars
as your whisper stilled my heart
no, they'll never catch me now
no, they'll never catch me
no, they cannot catch me now
we will escape somehow
somehow

And I dreamt one night
you were there in force
head held high
in uniform

It was ten years on
when you resurfaced in a motorcar
with the wave of an arm
you were there and gone

I think I have a mancrush on that skinny englishster.

And I know, it's not "Hot Corn, Cold Corn" by Flatt & Scruggs or "The Little Girl and the Dreadful Snake," but that's one helluva good song.

Are you sure that isn't 4 Non Blondes?

Actually, that song used to be in some TV commercial...but it came on during football games, which I don't suppose any of you saw, unless Mary Tyler Moore happened to be lining up at tight end.

Anyhoo, I took to doing a truly epic karaoke job whenever that commercial came on...truly epic. In a vocal range that would make Cicero sound like a baritone. Eventually, my sports-watching-cohorts became well-trained enough that they'd be on the lookout for that commercial coming on, and they'd have the channel changed quickly enough to spare themselves my epicosity.

I thought this topic got settled over at either TOT or Crashboard a few years back.

"Easy Lover" by Philip Bailey and Phil Collins, IIRC. :D

"Gentle on My Mind" by John Hartford
"Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash
"Early Morning Rain" by Gordon Lightfoot

-those would all be good choices for the Uncle Fester jukebox.

agreed....any idea why he let Glen Campbell fuck it up so bad?

same goes for Galveston by Jimmy Webb....Webb's version makes you almost start crying....

Not my favorite Prince song by any means, but Purple Rain is probably his finest work from a music culture standpoint.

^^^^^^

great album and Prince was very creative --
remember when we got the album at the radio station--
took it out of the sleeve--clear purple vinyl--cool--
when checking the tunes, discovered a backwards message--- went bonkers over the "Hendrix ending" of
Let's Go Crazy !!
good stuff

Thank you for not mocking my non-gay love for Prince. However, I'm sure someone will pick up your slack.

If you like Junior Brown (who is cool as H-E Double Hot Dogs), check out a band called The Derailers.

They do a wicked cover of "Rasberry Beret" as a bonus cut on the Reverb Deluxe CD.
