friend told me about these guys with separation sunday. friend of his was booking or managing them at the time. Saw them at a tiny club and I was down big time. They sassed Cubs fans during the show. Can't remember the names right now, but the pretty boy Minneapolis rapper references the Hold Steady's previous incarnation. Damn if my memory isn't failing me today.

I never heard them until I finally got around to listening to Seperation Sunday late last year, and I absolutely loved it. This new disc isn't blowing my mind in the same way, but it's still terrific.
Someone on another board mentioned that their previous band was called Lifter Puller. From what I can tell they were likely in the Pere Ubu vein, which makes me want to track down one of their discs. I'll report on what I find.

if you do, i'd be interested in hearing about it.....though David Thomas seems to have that "one of a kind" quality.

I've been listening to the last album by Lifter Puller and it has much in common with the Hold Steady, especially the lyrics, which is to be expected. There is a harder edge to it, however. I'd compare it to Archers Of Loaf and Pavement. It's worth hearing if you're a fan of Craig Finn.
