I never thought it would happen to me, but...

My computer doesn't recognize my DVD drives anymore. It shows them as removable drives. :?

Fix for missing DVD/CD drives.

Create a text file with the following stuff in it exactly as below and name it FIXCD.REG

Double click on the file and say yes to the merge into registry question.

I am sure you'll get better advice but what I suggest-

1. check device manager to see if they are working correctly.
2. Uninstall and reinstall the drives

That's all I got.. and I'm not holding that hand. I know where it's been.

Thanks. Created that file and saved it to my desktop. Double clicked. Merged. Restarted. Still showing up as removable drives instead of DVD drives. Still not responding to eject.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I started getting this message right about the same time that I lost access to the drives:

Are two drives set up as MASTER and SLAVE on a single ribbon cable internally?

EM, if you have a spare ribbon cable, replace the one currently hooking up the drives now.

First off, you will need the original disk, the location where the drivers are in your computer, or a disk with the drivers on it.

Then right click on "my computer" go to "properties" "hardware", go to "device manager", find the "DVD/CD drive right click on the drivers listed and uninstall the drivers.

When you reboot, the computer will find the hardware, and look for the drivers. If it can't find them, it will ask you for help.

Make sure you have copies of the correct drivers before you do it.

What drivers are you talking about Bushice?

Did you install drivers with your optical drives?

Isn't there just a button I can click?

I'm not sure. It's a pretty new box. I've never had the cover off.

I kind of did this. I uninstalled the drives and rebooted. It found the new hardware, but still didn't recgonize the drives as DVD or CD drives. I guess I'll just end up taking it to the retards at Best Buy. They'll be disappointed when they don't find any porn on it like on my old computer.

Crack open the case and check the flux capacitor. If it's not lit up check all the power leads once it lights up everything should work fine. It looks something like this.

I'm going to say that pretty much everything I said in here has already be suggested and said. Hopefully you just learn a little more of the why due to my simple, easy to follow explonations.

I have to tell you that it is weird that your DVD drive would show up as a removable disk. First I should ask you if you are sure that your DVD rom maybe isn't showing up and you are confusing it for a removable drive that does show up, when in reality you have both and both should show up?

Since your drives worked, and you said you didn't play with them, I'm going to take a guess that the problem isn't with the cabling. It is possible that they are having hardware or firmware issues. As a matter of fact, Dell is going through some issues with a certain model DVD drives made in Dec of last year. Also, since you said you had power problems, that could have also caused some problems with the drives or the PC. However, since the PC is new, we'll assume for now that your drive works.

The big question at this point is, does your PC see your drives at all. It's also possible that your PC may see the drive (BIOS) but Windows may not. Since you will be reading this in windows, lets check in windows first. If you follow the directions you received, check in your Hardware Device Manager to see if it shows your DVD drive. To get to the Device Manager, just right click with the mouse on My Computer, choose Properties, then click on the Hardware Tab and click on the Device manager button (top section under the Hardware Tab). Once the MMC (Microsoft Management Console) pops up with the Device Manager Add in, you should see an option for DVD/CD-ROM drives and under there you should see a listing for all of your drives. Are they there? If it shows your DVD drive without a red mark or yellow mark over it, then windows should see your drive and has loaded the correct drivers for it. If you see the DVD drive listed but there is a yellow or red mark over it, that means the computer couldn't find the drive or the driver is not the correct one. If you double click, windows will tell you the error it received.
Incidentally, since someone asked, yes there are drivers for dvd drives and cd drives, but you can usually just use the default windows one.
My guess is that your drive will show up with an error.

If your drive doesn't show up at all, it means that either you deleted it or windows can't find it at all and has unloaded the driver or any knowledge of your drive from the registry. This means it should detect the drive when you reboot. If it doesn't, then I would wonder about the hardware.

When you kind of uninstalled the drives, was it showing them under the DVD/CD-Rom drives section or as something else? Again, I'm wondering if you don't have a removable drive and you think its a DVD rom when in fact windows just can't see your DVD drive at all. Perhaps maybe you could do a screen capture of Device Manager and post it or email it so we can make sure that it is seeing all your stuff.

Anyway, if you determine that the Device manager isn't able to see your DVD drive, I would check in the BIOS. These days, you can usually get into the BIOS when the PC is booting by hitting the F2 or Del key on your keyboard within the first 5 to 10 seconds of turning on your computer. Once you are in, you should be able to see what drives your computer detected. If you are quick, you should also be able to see it while its booting up, usually on the first or second screen during the Bootstrap proces before Windows actually boots.

Now if windows sees your drive, that at least means its working enough to communicate with windows. If windows doesn't see your drive, but the PC does, it should mean that your Drive is working, but windows has a bad driver for it or no driver at all. At this point, you could further test the DVD drive by booting from a CD, like if you were to get your hands on a Live CD with Linux on it and see if that can boot up from your DVD drive. If you don't have one, then just boot into windows. At this point, i would go to the Manufacturer's website, and see if they have a new driver or firmware that is available for your drive. If you go to the HP support website, you should be able to look up all the drivers and firmware avaiblable for your PC from the website by putting in the information on your PC. I would consider looking for a BIOS Upgrade for your PC, a Driver and/or a Firmware upgrade for your DVD drive. Today, Firmware upgrades will check for the drive first before they attempt to install themselves, so this is also a good way to see if your drive is responding. Once you install the new drivers and firmware, hopefully things will work correctly. If not, I would start thinking that maybe its a hardware issue.

The error message you are getting has to do with a Game Portal System that either came installed on your system or you installed it. Its from Digital Interactive Systems. You can find them here: http://www.discoverconsole.com/. I would probably go ahead and unstall that program to fix the error, but it shouldn't have anything to do with your DVD Drive. Still uninstalling that program certainly won't hurt to see if it may somehow fix the other problem as well. If you want, you can always download the software from that link above and try using it again. It probably got corrupt when you lost power.

Anyway, go through some of these suggestions, which should pretty much mirror everyone else's suggestions and see where you get. If it still doesn't fix the PC, let us know what you did and what results it gave you so we can make some other suggestions.
