Picking Favorite Easy For Thompson

MINNEAPOLIS - Former Georgetown coach John Thompson, who announced Friday's Florida-Georgetown game for the Westwood One radio network, probably didn't have a problem choosing his favorite coach in the matchup.

Hoyas coach John Thompson III is Thompson's son, and Gators coach Billy Donovan was the scrappy Providence point guard who shot Georgetown out of the 1987 NCAA Tournament in the Southeast Regional final.

"I don't have a lot of great memories about Billy Donovan," the elder Thompson joked Thursday. "I remember him hitting all those damn shots and sending us home [in 1987]."

Thompson bristled Thursday when a reporter from a Gainesville television station said Florida fans wondered whether he could be objective when calling Friday's game.

"You think I give a damn about what Gator fans think? I'm going to analyze the game, tell you what I see happening, talk about the strategy," Thompson said. "Who do I want to win? Who do you think? My son.

"What am I going to say? Billy Donovan is an idiot? No. I'm not there to get on any kid or coach. But if I had a choice, I wouldn't be doing the radio broadcast. I'd be the referee. That way I could really influence the outcome."

Why is he doing the game? Just like Phil shouldn't do a Chris game or Bob shouldn't do a Brian game. Pathetic. Who wants to listen to someone's DAD besides Hoya folk. Shouldn't he be on the local hoya radio broadcast not a national one.

Oh well......don't have to worry about it again.

Do you think they have an effect on the game or something?
Nah....but who wants to listen to that crap.

What a stupid thing to care about. Who the fuck cares, seriously.

So what if its biased? Are Florida fans that insecure?

Stupid

TRex, you are right on with your comments. The last thing we need is anyone's dad announcing their sons game.

BtH, fucko, do you really think anyone expects the announcer to have an affect on the game? No, but we all complain about announcers for various reasons. This, IMO is just the biggest offender of them all.

BRef, you don’t care if it is biased? If I am forced to listen to two retards they decide to pair up for a game, I would at least like them to be neutral and provide a somewhat honest breakdown of the game.

And for those of us who listen to the game via radio, it sure does affect our viewpoint of the game. There should be unbiased announcers or, if you want JThompson out there, bring in a Florida alum/ex coach/fan who is knowledgeable enough to announce.

No i have problems with it at all. I loved when Bob Griese called Brian's Rose Bowl win.

These guys are professionals, if they don't do a good job then that's on the network.

Ever here of nepotism. Hard to be unbiased when your damn son is a coach.

If John Thopson was officiating the game, yeah, I can see having a beef. Are you seriously trying to say that broadcast professionals shouldn't ever do games where they have a personal connection?
Define personal connection. A close family member as coach or player? I would say that NO they should not.
If this is something that seriously affects how good a time you have listening to the game or watching the game, I'd highly suggest getting a Yahoo subscription or something.
How could it not? I guess if you are a hoya its great. It would even bother me as a neutral fan.

That's not a good definition of nepotism. Brian Griese's career wasn't enhanced by his father doing color commentary with Keith Jackson.

Maybe it puts into question the impartiallity of his reporting, but its color commentary, who the fuck really cares.

Did you even listen to the G'Town-Fla broadcast? Thompson isn't the greatest color commentator in the world, but he was in no way cheerleading for his former team on the air. He was giving both teams their props when warranted.

And I'll take him and Harlan every single time over the absolute joke of "broadcasting" that is Packer and Nance.

I really don't see anything wrong with what he said. In fact, this line is quite rackable:
You think I give a damn about what Gator fans think?
