a buddy gave me a disc with a ton of DNA and the Dog Faced Hermans--with some other stuff tacked on at the end. and the later project from Giant Sand's Howe Gelb, Arizona Amp, is pretty damned good. great countrified/off key cover of Traffic's Low Spark of High Heeled Boys....almost worth the price of admission on it's own.
also sounds great on my new computer speakers!

What's the story behind DNA? I only know them as the namesake behind the band blonde redhead, who I looked into tonight because a friend told me that Enon was the offshoot of Brainiac after Timmy Taylor died, and one of the two Japanese chicks in Blonde Redhead went on to be in Enon.
Long story short, what's up w/ DNA?

DNA was Arto Lindsey's "no-wave" band in the late 70's NYC midtown--kind of the real new wave thing before the Cars and skinny ties (no offense to the Cars, they wrote some great pop songs)...
they cross pollenate with Material which has Frith and guy who plays guitar on Rain Dogs...real angular sound....can't think of his name. also Golden Palominos with Anton Fier.
i think it's cool stuff. and i hear more and more on the local CU station that tends in that direction. kind of art/noisy rock. Sonic Youth is probably in the middle mix there too.
edit: Bill Laswell is the guy i was thinking of. not sure if he plays on Rain Dogs.....maybe confusing him with Marc Ribot.

there's a really shitty movie called something like Midtown 77 with Basquiat and Debbie Harry.....but it's got DNA in it. i like DNA and Material (which is more jazz inflected), but it's geeky stuff maybe, and i don't know if it's ahead it's time or aging badly.
i''ll make you a DNA disc if you want.
