Still, when R&D is invested and the FDA sets various guidelines and regulations there is a balance that must be achieved. R&D is costly, not just in the discovering of the proper combination of chemicals, machinery, technology (which may need to be created for a specific end), or vehicle for use, but also in the efficacy, efficiency, and side effects. The FDA emplaces guides and guardrails which can and mostly does draw out the process of a drug regime or technique going from a potential cure to an accepted and viable treatment.

Furthermore, most R&D projects amount to nothing due to side effects or lack of effectiveness— and this too must be factored into the eventual price of the rare project that turns out well. And on top of it all, when everything lines up perfectly— the timeframe from beginning to end is relatively quick, the treatment is highly effective, and there are few negatives associated with the product —the clock on the patent for the treatment is now running. Eventually their competitors will have access to the process that it takes to make the product.

Finally, the company needs to insure itself against the inevitable lawsuits, for good or ill. This too is factored into the price.

Some companies cannot afford this process on their own. Others utilize the university system to help defray cost associated with developing treatments. And still others take grants from the government to assist them in their work. If a company cannot turn a profit then they go out of business.

I think we can all agree that the concept of socialism makes sense. A society of people working together will obviously do better than a society of individuals who waste too many resources cockblocking one another.
