More U&L

Post by Mikey »

We're going to be seeing a guy named M Ward tomorrow night up in LA. I've never heard the name before but he's opening for an artist we've wanted to see for a couple of years (Rhiannon Giddens).
According to Wiki he's from Portland. Anybody familiar?

I dl'ed a couple of his records from Prime last night and give it a listen. Fairly mellow but in just one album I could hear influences of Dylan, Paul Simon, John Lennon, the Stones (in their C&W mode), the Kinks, Leonard Cohen and a few more I can't immediately identify. I know it sounds kind of derivative but I was actually impressed that he could roll all this into a sound that seems to be his own. Looking forward to seeing him play.

M. Ward was raised in Ventura County, California, and moved to Portland, Oregon after college

He did the same thing about 80% of californians do.

Makes for lovely traffic and housing prices.

80% of Californians moved to Oregon?

I was wondering why it got so quiet around here.

It's probably more like 90%.

Related to nothing here -- years ago, I worked with a guy from Mexico, Raul. Got his green card, and was trying to bring his wife and kids up. One day I asked him if he moved here directly, or to California first. He replied "Straight to here. The problem with California is the exact same problem with Mexico... too many fucking Mexicans."

I took a break due to laughter after that.
