Michigan lures Stanford DB...
...by offering his mom a "job." :|
http://www.freep.com/story/sports/colle ... /22970123/
In a tweet, she referred to the position as "Team Mom" but of course UofM gave her some fancy title to make it all sound and look professional. Honestly, how is crap like this not a violation? How is this any different than directly paying a player? The arms race is getting out of control. It's only a matter of time until every school is budgeting salaries for made up positions for parents of recruits.

Re: Michigan lures Stanford transfer...
Sad thing is she doesn't think anything of announcing it on twitter.
Re: Michigan lures Stanford DB...
The kid is a good player but did not really play up to high expectations. Not too uncommon for fifth year "seniors" who already have their degree to transfer (a guy named Wilson come to mind).
Stanford has several other outstanding DBs returning from last year's team (8th in FBS and 1st in PAC12 pass defense), and picked up a couple of four star and a couple of three star DBs for their incoming class. Lyons would be missed, but he would be competing for playing time next season.
Harbaugh's the kind of coach you love to have on your side. Otherwise he's a conniving asshole.

Don't think you need permission if you've already graduated. At any rate, here's David Shaw's comment:Jsc810 wrote:Wouldn't Stanford have to sign off on that transfer? I didn't think you could just transfer without permission.
"For those guys going into their fifth year that want the opportunity to play someplace else,'' Shaw said, "I've never said no, never tried talk anybody out of it.''

Never said it was. :?Mikey wrote:Not too uncommon for fifth year "seniors" who already have their degree to transfer (a guy named Wilson come to mind).
This isn't about Lyons, but about sleazy recruiting tactics (and yes, it's still recruiting when it involves transfers).
Re: Michigan lures Stanford DB...
Didn't mean to offend you.
My comment wasn't aimed at you but was meant as a point of information that has some relevance to the issue. It's not like Harbaugh is inducing a player to quit a school before graduating.
Sleazy tactics? Probably.
Get back to me when it comes out that his extended family is living rent free in Grosse Pointe Shores.

Sleazy at best. At worst, a violation:
NCAA rule:13.2.1.1 Specific Prohibitions.
"Specifically prohibited financial aid, benefits and arrangements include, but are not limited to, the following: (Adopted: 4/23/08)
(a) An employment arrangement for a prospective student-athlete's relatives;"

OK. Seems pretty cut and dried to me.
Harbaugh needs to have at least one nut and several schollies removed.

Re: Michigan lures Stanford DB...
Do you really think he came to Michigan because his mom got a job? Do you think Harbaugh would bend/break the rules for a one year guy? The defensive backfield is not a position of great need, there is no way he risks anything for one fifth year part time starter. The kid has a Stanford degree and probably some relationship with JH. He is going to grad school at UM...that's why he came.
Now if you want to see a hire that gives an advantage...look into JH hiring the coach from Paramus N.J. as a recruiter...Paramus is where Jabrill Peppers came from and next year's top recruit plays.

Re: Michigan lures Stanford DB...
Kinda disappointing to see Harbaugh already resorting to sleaze-ball tactics. He tried to poach Dashon Neil (sp?)from Nebraska... Michigan's staff got thrown out of their home for the shit they were saying.
Looks like MIchigan is making it clear they are gonna be another gutter tactic scum program. Lovely... Look for Harbaugh to have them sanctions within 2 years and he will bail back to the NFL with a fatter wallet and Michigan's rep shitty.

He went after 3 or 4 Huskers pledges and got one. It's tough to assemble a class in three weeks. He was asked about poaching in his signing day presser. He said that it was done out of necessity and shouldn't be as prevalent going forward. That said, everyone does it. You poach and you get poached. Such is the landscape these days. If a kid is solid he'll stay.

It doesn't matter what I or anyone else thinks. The rule is in place to prevent from having to ask these questions.WolverineSteve wrote:Do you really think he came to Michigan because his mom got a job?
Or maybe we should just give everyone the benefit of the doubt?

So, Ty Wheatley Jr.,?
Bottom line...I don't pretend to know how the NCAA operates or the ins and outs of the rules. But surely this is within the rules, perhaps grad transfers are exempt. She didn't get the job because of her son, no player is worth that kind of risk. She got the job because that's what she does, and she does it in Miami. Her familiarity with South Florida is way more valuable than a one year depth guy.
