Two of our computers have picked up a virus chrome.exe

Norton didn't grab it.

There are forums that offer to help remove it, but I know nothing about said forums. Any ideas on which are legit and which aren't?

That should get it
I also suggest you run a full scan in safe mode to double check

I'll go with -- "What Y2K said." Run Malwarebytes in Safe mode (which may or may not work, but it's a good place to start).

But how about doing a system restore to last week?

Also a great suggestion... that very likely won't work (but again, worth a shot). The problem being, that most malware authors know what's up, and they run a routine that disables and deletes your restore points.


Another trick that might work for you, Lefty, if you're feeling slightly brave -- on one of your still-working machines (look in the task manager to try and verify there's no malware running), install and update Malwarebytes.

Get a SATA-to-USB adapter (Best Buy or wherever, just about any computer shop should have one, about $20(? Can't remember what I paid)). Restart the good machine in safe mode (don't need networking after the updates are done). Remove the hard drive from the infected machine (little tiny phillips screwdriver, if it's a laptop). Plug it in with the adapter and run Malwarebytes on that drive (the new version isn't as flexible on how you scan as the old days). It will probably take quite a while, especially in Safe Mode, but running SM gives you an extra layer of protection against files trying to write to other drives (unlikely).

Often, malware can attach to legit processes, and "hide" from scanner software, but often they're discovered if the operating system on the drive in question isn't running.


Oh, did I mention that I make no guarantees that any of that will make a shit's bit of difference (besides piss you off even more), but that's where I'd start.

Uhm... maybe you should back away here.

The name of the malware he cited out front should have told you.

Chrome is MUCH more susceptible to malware. Never been too terribly impressed with Firefox in that regard, either.

I think I'll just continue to use my IE with zero protection (beyond Windows Firewall) with no problems, like I have been forever.

In fact, working on corporate networks, I've come across just about none that use anything but IE... and they have security experts that don't share your concerns.

IE is WAYYYYYYYY more secure than their competitors. Yeah, I've heard all the bashing. But here's a hint -- just because you read it on the internet, it doesn't mean it's true. Especially if you heard it from someone trying to make cash by competing with Microsoft.

And Chrome isn't a "browser" -- it's a "spyware."

I've found all 3 of the most popular browsers out there are equally capable of being taken over by malicious programs. I have noticed that computers used by people who don't know what the fuck they are going on the Internet are almost 100% likely to get viruses.

At least in Chrome, crashes are sand-boxed to the particular tab they're affecting...

I still prefer Firefox (or rather, the Pale Moon spin-off based on Firefox) for the extensions. No other browser's extension base even comes close.

I have Norton 360 and I've seen it catch and delete the chrome exe download thing a few times. Maybe you need a newer version of Norton. By the way Google Chrome has been my primary browser for a few years now. Way better than IE in my opinion.
