American Eagle Check Pilot has to call the FAA...

Post by Left Seater »

Not something anyone ever looks forward to. Strange that this crew never heard the other pilots giving them a heads up. You hear a couple of mic clicks and a few other verbal hot mic warnings.

I can understand the frustration because it sounds like the controller gave him instructions that put them in conflict with a 172. Shortly after clearing them to 3000 from 4000, the controller gives three right turn commands. The first to 190, then to 200, then to 220. So he is tightening up their turn while they are at a slower speed and are going to end up with a tail wind. Not the best situation to be in. Then he flips them back to a heading of 180 before another turn to 360 for final.

I know have have made similar comments, but I didn't broadcast them out over the approach frequency.

What are the likely repercussions from that?

Any concern that the ATC was giving out a phone number while on approach instead of waiting till the plane landed?

no regulations were violated that I know of so I doubt the Eagle pilot was in any trouble at all. The phone number was probably the approach controller's line so probably all that was said were mutual suggestions to jack off with a cheese grater

That Marty is the missile that shot down TWA 800 and then assumed a low earth orbit so as to later attach itself to the drone that attacked the WTC on 9/11. After completing the WTC attacks it made its way to DC where it also attacked the Pentagon. It is now rumored to be orbiting somewhere over Northern Canada until Obama needs it.

Deplaning from Airtran Flight 417 from ATL to BUF I passed by one of the cockpit crew in the doorway and told him good job. I also asked him if he was "the left seater". He gave me a strange look, said yes, and mentioned something to me about the weather during the landing. Is "left seater" just our Left Seater's nickname, or is it an in house one? Inquiring minds gots to know.

I'm pretty sure the left seat is for the pilot, the right is for the co-pilot.

It is a relatively common term among pilots. Not so much in the commercial world since many of those guys were former military and have call signs.

The reaction he gave you may have been more shock that you would use that term rather than the more common lay term of captain.

I got the nick from my first boss who used it mostly to piss off two older guys who were co-pilots. I also have been given the honorary call sign of "Pilaf" by two former Tomcat drivers since they still use their call signs and we work together a bunch. The Pilaf is a play on where I went to college and also my tendency to disappear shortly after midnight when out drinking with them, ie to peel off.

Thanks for the clarification. I couldn't resist using the term when I had a chance.

Wolfie, another clue is that the captian wears 4 stripes on his epaulets and the FO only has 3 stripes
