Greece PET

Post by Left Seater »

So the wife and I just returned from 2 plus weeks in Greece. We flew thru Paris on Air France because she had a bunch of Delta sky pesos. Air France has a Houston Paris flight and amazingly there was business class space available. We had an overnight in Paris on the way out which sucked but was unavoidable. What a waste of 27 hours. Not to mention CDG airport is one of the worst airports in the world. After that stop we were off to Athens for 4 days, Crete for 6 and Santorini for 6.

So starting in Athens we first visited the Parthenon.
Image

Image

Image

We also visited a theater just below the Partenon.
Image

Then it was off to a church on the other side of the complex.
Image

Found this great little spot for lunch, 5 dishes, beer or wine for each person all for 24 Euros.
Image

Next stop was the original Olympic Stadium. This stadium goes back to 500BC.
Image

Image

We spent the next two days working on business matters in Athens but spent each evening on the roof of our hotel with a pool, bar, and views of the Parthenon.
Image

On our final day in Athens we hiked to the top of the highest point in Athens. Made for decent views.
Image

Then it was off to Crete where we picked up this semi automatic Fiat Punto rental. First time I wanted to kick my own ass on this trip.
Image

Sunset over the old fort in Rethmenon.
Image

One day on Crete we hiked Samaria Gorge. It is the largest Gorge in Europe. We totaled 28 km on this day. We hiked from breakfast to the top of the Gorge, then down thru the gorge to the sea. There we were picked up by boat as there isn't any road into the end of gorge.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Mrs. Seater crossing the stream at the bottom of the gorge.
Image

My view for 90% of the hike.
Image

Mrs. Seater in the Iron Curtain, the gorge walls are 3 meters apart here and 550 meters high.
Image

Post hike refreshment waiting for the boat.
Image

Wait, are we refugees or hikers?
Image

The next day we went to the beach. The day started off cool so Mrs Seater was wearing a bikini and a sweater.
Image

Image

Mrs Seater on our balcony in Crete.
Image

Entrance to our hotel in Santorini.
Image

View from our room in Santorini. Damn Cruise ships showed up every day between 10:00 and 4:00. Therefore we avoided Fira between these times.
Image

Other hotels in the area.
Image

One day we hiked the rim of the caldera from damn near end to end. Totaled 28 km. Mrs Seater on the trail.
Image

View in Oia back to the north.
Image

Bottles? Really?
Image

Rental car in Santorini, second time I wanted to kick my own ass.
Image

Top of the red sand beach we hiked down to one day.
Image

Sailboat beached on the black sand beach.
Image

All in all a great trip and we would return.

Good one. I appreciate the effort it takes to take photos, upload, organize, and post them. Saves us all from having to spend money and time to go see crumbling ruins, rocks, and such.

If you feel you wasted 27 hours in Paris, that's your fault. Pretty pathetic, actually.

There is a difference between being large and being unathletic. My weight has been very steady at about 270 for years now. My resting heart rate, BP etc are likely far better than most on this board. My cardio is excellent. Yes I do wear a 53 in jackets and 42 in pants but those are much smaller than I wore in college. Glad to know y'all are so worried about me.

Oh, and why do you think I would lose so much weight if I suddenly had no money? Being on welfare hasn't reduced the waist size or diabetes rates much.

Mvscal,

We have been over this before. You love Paris, I don't. I am not a big fan of the food, far to rich for my taste, the smoking which is everywhere, the people - too bad Pariseans aren't like most of the rest of the French, the hotels, the infrastructure, etc. You love it and that's fine. I have been there and seen the sights and try to avoid it as much as possible. Far better European cities in my book. Hell, me avoiding Paris should be better for you, one fewer tourist is a good thing for that town.

dude, we need to get together for the "fast for an old fat dude" triathalon/death match. I have never actually done a triathalon, yeah, I know, you are all shocked, but I would like to some day. I am starting to get back into cycling to work. Just need to hit the pool.

So, 270, huh? How tall are you?

Thanks for the Mrs. Seater pics, Lefty.

All kidding aside, outstanding PET. That looked like a pretty strenuous hike you two took. 28k but no mention of the elevation climb. I'm going to guess from the pics that it was hardly a stroll up the steps at the air conitioned mall.

Brews look interesting too. Judging from the glass, the second is a hefeweizen?

Fried zucchini and nobody's having any? Must be maintaining a strict fried food free diet.

And what are those things on the right? Let me take a guess- Lamb meatballs wrapped in carmelized grape leaves. :?

While you're on it, might as well describe the rest of the fare, including the beer and wine.

Todd,

On the gorge hike we started with about an 11km uphill hike in which we gained about 500 meters in elevation. This got us to the national park entrance where we descended from 3,400 feet to sea level over about 17km. However, the vast majority of that elevation loss was in the first 3km of the hike as we dropped down the gorge walls.

As for the lunch in Athens, we chose the Greek salad (no lettuce found in them in Greece) tzatziki (Greek yoghurt, cucumber, olive oil, garlic), stewed lamb meat balls (no grape leaves on them, just cooked long and slow so the tomato sauce was quite thick), fried zucchini (which we crushed) and grilled red snapper which wasn't one the table yet. That is one that isn't cooked until ordered.

I had an Alpha Beer and the wife had red wine. I am not much of a beer guy, but when 1/2 a liter is the same price as a coke lite, I will drink it. Oh, and the fact vodka, tequila and scotch were about 12 Euros a shot I mostly stuck with beer and wine. This wine was closest to a Merlot, with lots of legs. The other beers I had were Fix and Mythos. All of these were less than 3 Euros for a 1/2 liter.

Thanks Buc.

People can think what they want, but the 5 or 6 guys I have had a drink or a meal with from this board would prolly say I am a pretty genuine guy. And one of the reasons to post the photos is to inspire. I know that I PM'ed a poster here after one of his PETs and he gave me hotel and restaurant suggestions when we visited the same place.

Hate all you want, but there wasn't a single fast food meal consumed on our trip.

I know plenty about French food, and it is way down near the bottom of my list.

He's not pretending.

I guess you've never heard of "French Fries" and "French Toast"?

Look, the guy's only 50 years old and he's sporting a boiler the size of an 80 year old grandpa with a waistband riding up around the throat... and his tit's are bigger than his daughters.

He could pretty much eat a whale... and still be hungry.

He's had his fair share of "French" going down his gullet.
