I've played a lot of the courses on that list and here's my rundown

all of the Bandon Courses are exceptional and that is probably the best golf complex existing today....Pacific Dunes is IMHO the best course I've ever played.....spyglass is way overrated and way overpriced, Pasatiempo is a monster with greens that will kick your ass....look around and you can find deals to play it.....if I have one course left to play, it would probably be Pasatiempo

chambers bay is worth every cent, but then again I told them I from Washington and even had the fake ID to prove it....a beautiful layout....Troon was something of a disappointment-burned out and just not what I would have expected.....I couldn't get on Torrey Pines because they were holding the San Diego city championships the week I was there......Crosswater was okay, but I'd definitely drive the extra miles to play Bandon.....Pumpkin Ridge is a tough course and of course I got stuck playing with two dudes that had no business playing that course, and we relentless in searching for the $0.75 golf balls.....Wolf Creek is a fucking dynamite course, long, tough and greens that are about as good as it gets

southern dunes in Arizona is a kick ass course....Circling Raven in northern Idaho should be a lot higher....I'd rank it in the top 25...I just played it last week and it's even better than I remembered.....truly a great layout and makes the Coeur d Alene resort course look like a steaming pile of dogshit

one that should be on there be isn't is Old Works Golf Course in Anaconda Montana.....where else can you play a Jack Nicklaus signature course for less than $75?

oh and the French Lick course in Indiana can take their overpriced green fees and stick them straight up their asses.....I've never seen a ruder bunch of fuckwits than the asswipes that run that complex.....

when I finished, the cart boy literally threw my clubs on the ground and told he me needed to the get the cart washed as soon as possible......."hey, what about the chip you put in my R-9 dude?' "you'll have to take that up with the proshop"

the proshops response "how do we know that wasn't there before"
me: "because I'm telling you it wasn't. why did your cart guy throw my clubs off the cart"

"we've got a corporate outing starting in about 30 minutes-you were lucky you got to play"

"what about my driver?"

"we'll give you a 10 percent discount next time you play!"

"really, a whole ten percent????"

"here's a better idea, how about I never step foot on this property again? you've got a nice course here, too bad you ruin it by being a bunch of fucking assholes"

"sir, we're going to have to ask you to leave if you can't be civilized"

"how about the $300 driver your cart boy just fucked up-what are you going to do about that?"

crickets.......

the only course worth playing in indiana is The Fort Course
get out, get out while there's still time

Concur re: the Bandon Dunes golf complex. The Best. Fucking. Golf. Experience. Ever.
The entire place is nothing but golf… well, and beer and good food. Everyone was incredibly polite and accommodating. Probably spent a li’l more than I could afford at the time, but I’ll never regret it. Treated myself to a couple nights there and four rounds of golf a few years ago after a few days of work in Portland. I arrived around 2-ish in the afternoon, not planning to play until the following morning. Eff that, I said. Walked to Pacific Dunes clubhouse and asked if they could fit in a single. No prob. Show up at first tee w/my caddie and I was paired up with a superintendant of a school district and a surgeon from S.D., and a guy who said he puts together the Buick Open each year in S.D. I knew I was out of my league, financially, when they were talking about whether they could fit another of their friends on their private plane back down to S.D. The creation of Old MacDonald was juuuust beginning when I was there, so didn’t get to play it.

Played Pasatiempo quite some time ago and don’t remember much about it. World Woods, Pine Barrens (#19) remains one of my favorite golf courses ever. A bit similar to Bandon in that it’s just about golf… nothing more. Two courses there and the second one, Rolling Oaks deserves to be on this list. As a matter of fact, used to be some time ago. Pumpkin Ridge played some time ago and like Felix, it kicked my ass. Another course that used to be ranked on this list, La Purisima in Lompoc, CA, should still be. Have played countless rounds there and not sure why it has fallen from the ranks. Spread my ashes on hole #15 when that time comes.

No shit... we take our golf pretty seriously around here.

And believe it or not, I haven't played any of the courses on that list (Eastmoreland used to make those lists, which I've played a million times). Then again, every one on that list is at least 3 hours away from me, with the exception of Pumpkin (where Tiger won Am Championship #3, and rumor has it shows up on occasion wearing goofy disguises when he goes into his office at Nike).

But I'll get to Bandon, one of these days. Awesome part of the world regardless, and there's plenty of other nice courses beyond just the Bandon complex.

The USGA is drooling to have a US Open at Bandon, but it's so far from any major metro area, it's going to be tough -- Bandon has quite a bit of nice accomodations, but not enough to put up everyone at the US Open. I suppose all the fans and media can stay in Coos Bay (10-15 minutes up 101), but it ain't exactly a luxury town.

I'm surprised The Reserve didn't make the list -- where they used to play The Tradition. It's actually in the Metro area (Pumpkin is just outside of it).

Which brings me to RACKs... RACK Peter Jacobsen for bringing back Peter's Party, aka the Umpqua Bank Challenge, which is a charity event at The Reserve in about 4 weeks. And RACK Robert Garrigus, Boo Weekly, Steve Elkington, Ben Crane (right in his backyard), Bill and Jay Haas, Scott McCarron, and Kyle Stanley for taking a week off from their paying job to come help with our local charities.

Casey Martin and Lee Trevino are showing up, too.

I guess Jake still has some pull, eh?

I was playing Jake's video game when I met my wife. Jake's pull is so strong he helped me pull.

I picked up a rental car at spanish bay a few days ago.

Does that count?

Never have played anything on that list. Rack the places that will let you on for under 100 bucks. I am sure PB is very nice, but, nobody is ever gonna get me to fork over 500 bucks to walk around their place. Rack them, I guess for getting some to do it.

sorry, my rant was unrelated to U&L golf bode, but I had to get that off my chest....everytime I look down at my driver all I can see is the ding that fuckwit put in my driver....

back to the subject....a buddy of mine told me that Langdon Farms golf course was a pretty decent course....he also said the Nicklaus Pronghorn course was really good, the Fazio Pronghorn not so much....

I'll never play there because even as much as I love the game, my sensibilities just won't let me dole out anything more than about $200 for a round (the Bandon trip came in just under that when I averaged it out)....the only course I would pay anything to play would be Augusta and of course, money won't buy you a round there.....

Good point about Augusta. Still wouldn't drop 500 to play it, but, I'd pay more to play there than any other place/

Wonder if anyone has ever successfully snuck on to a place like Augusta or PB?

And believe it or not, I've never played there, either. It's right down the road, too -- drive by it quite frequently. I guess they spent a boatload of jack on drainage pipes to keep it playing all winter. I'm sure a good solid hook/slice could take out a windshield on I-5, although I've never heard of that happening.

And there's lots of talk about tearing it down and building a casino and shopping center and housing.

BTW -- if anyone is bumping around the Portland area with some clubs (looking at Feelix and Ken in particular), there's a track called Broadmoor, not too far from the airport, that's pretty darn fun. They have a good mix of easy/hard/easy/hard to keep it entertaining, and it's less than $30 (weekdays anyway) to play a nice, well-kept course (if planes don't bother you, although it's away from the main runways, although you get the UPS/FedEx planes flying over).

I’ve played that course twice, I think. I enjoyed it but do recall that it was overpriced and the employees seemingly had to score a 95+ on the ‘Arrogance Aptitude Test’ on their interview-entrance-exams.

Don’t recall Broadmoor.

Another version of U&L BODE:

Played 9 yesterday without it feeling like someone was shoving a dagger into my elbow every time I made contact. By the time I was done, I started learning to swing a club without crying for my mommy, and bracing for the intense shooting pain that was sure to follow.

It was kind of nice. Being almost-happy with double-bogies was pretty lame. Fucker was actually going where I aimed it... which is nice. Catching a bunch of them awfully thin, but that's an easy fix... because they went straight.

Decent scores, here I come (if the fucker doesn't start hurting again).

there was a former tour pro that snuck on to Augusta and managed to play it without ever being caught...the pro was Taylor Smith who passed away in 2007....Mike Stachura wrote an article about it back in 1999 in Golf Digest....if you can find the article read it, it was funny as hell

Can't remember anything much about it, but I seem to remember a guy writing a book about his life's work of sneaking on to the finest courses in the country.
