This thread needs to keep rolling -- LTS's knowledge of all things science is always fucking amusing, and his willingness to constantly put it on display never fails to produce some gut-busting moments.

But as usual, LTS, I'm here to help...

Uranium isn't an organic compound.

CO2 is.

Matter of fact, uranium isn't a compound at all, which is kind of a prerequisite for being an "organic compound."

Glad I could help.

BTW -- fuel cells? You bought into W's cash-grab for his oil company buddies?

You?

Really?

I'll help you out some more...

Unless you've come up with some radical new process that you're keeping a lid on, hydrogen is an absolute garbage fuel source.

You know where they get hydrogen?

It's fractionated from natural gas. Which results in about an 85% reduction in energy potential from just burning the gas to begin with.

Of course, it can always be extracted through electrolysis... and since your knowledge of all things scientific is quite well-established around here, I'll help you out some more...

The Laws of Thermodynamics pretty well cover the "something-for-nothing" theories... they don't work. You get way more energy out of the electricity than you'll ever get by burning the hydrogen it extracts.

The "exciting new fuel cell technology" folks (spurred by W Bush using it as an excuse to give corporate welfare to petroleum companies) crack me up. If by "new technology," they really meant "invented and patented in the 1800's, and been gathering dust ever since because they're useless," then you're on to something.

Sure, just like the Tea Baggers "aren't racist" (wink wink).

Look, I don't care if SS is goose-stepping about his backyard--or within the narrow runnels of his headspace.

I'm interested in the actual ideas, etc., upon which you clowns--as reasonable examples of the general clown population--are operating.

Perhaps SS is going to explain to us the Clean, Limitless, Organic, Workable, Nice qualities of "fracking" for natural gas. Let's stand by for that.

Uranium, meanwhile, is a basic element--you know, on the periodic chart? Yes, it's organic---mined and processed, etc.

What's with all the panties in a collective wad today? Oh, that's right, it's the end of nuclear power. And the end of the fake bluster of the fake ass clowns who just dutifully parrot all things Limpdick--and that sure includes nukes.

or·gan·ic – adjective
1. noting or pertaining to a class of chemical compounds that formerly comprised only those existing in or derived from plants or animals, but that now includes all other compounds of carbon.

Should we go over this slowly to allow you to grasp why you're clowning yourself?

Alright, good enough. Organic being carbon based. My use of the term simply refers to its natural origin. What's the point again?

After all, none is saying nuclear waste is some kind of "no biggie," and it's plenty obvious now that the nuclear fission model of boiling water is obsolete and far too dangerous. So..?

Unwad your panties and start getting with wind, solar, hydro, and fuel cell technology.

He's on a roll.

I think it's awesome the way he constantly lectures the rest of us about scientific topics, and then those of us who managed to make it through at least our sophomore year of high school collectively have to correct him.

Good stuff.

Nevermind that he doesn't know that an element, by definition, isn't organic... nevermind that he doesn't understand how much solar radiation hits the earth's surface... nevermind he doesn't know what a fuel cell is or does, and why it's been a dead end technology for 100+ years... nevermind that he doesn't know how much in the way of resources it takes to build and transport a windmill as opposed to how much power it occasionally produces...

he's got this science shit DOWN, dammit.

Now Dins, your idiotic attack is as drunk and unarranged as your Soros conspiracy rants. Whether or not uranium is technically organic is not the issue. Rather, SS was suggesting in his fatuous style that coal is somehow clean..i.e., organic. Okay, this is classic right wing hack nonsense. Just like your ludicrous and perversely stupid denial of climate change. You've in fact got nothing backing you up except for Koch funded fake experts...and Glenn beck--he's with you all the way....

What do you support again?...Oh yeah, because there "is no Climate Change threat" we can just go on burning fossil fuel, right? Sorry, I forgot how up to date you are! Have another drink, it's early but you need it.

There's a reason that when nuke experts heard that, they were stunned. Think of it as giving a child with a 105 degree fever a nice tall glass of iced battery acid...you might temporarily solve one problem, but you cause a whole host of new ones. In the case of salt water, when it reacts with the hot fuel rods, it creates hydrogen which results in the lovely explosions we all keep seeing on the news. It also contains brine, which (after the water evaporates) provides fuel for the fire, as well as clogging up the pipes with all kinds of crap that will make it extremely difficult if not impossible to cool down the pipes using the standard cooling pipes and pumps were they able to get them back on.

I agree. I think even the press was getting bored with the Charlie Sheen shit. This quake definitely provides a more interesting subject matter.
Normally that type of cynical thinking would be spot on. But not in this case. The situation is totally and completely fucked on a spectacular level. You know how when a forest fire gets too big and too hot that they just have to let it burn itself out? It's like that, except the shit on fire is plutonium.

As for the radiation reaching the West Coast, we're okay as long as the emissions are mostly limited to steam, which stays fairly low to the ground. It's the smoke from a sustained fire or irradiated dust from an explosion that could potentially carry up into the atmosphere, catch a ride on the jet stream and fall with a rainstorm in CA and the U&L. Even still, our chances of exposure are extremely small.

As per the head of the NRC...
"What we believe at this time is that there has been a hydrogen explosion in this unit due to an uncovering of the fuel in the fuel pool," Gregory Jaczko told a House energy and commerce subcommittee hearing Wednesday. "We believe that secondary containment has been destroyed and there is no water in the spent fuel pool, and we believe that radiation levels are extremely high, which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures."

I'm assuming they didn't think so. I suppose that even if they had a local source of fresh water like a lake or small pond, and were able to rig up a massive portable pumping station and power it, the water would've been full of dirt and debris and contaminated the salt water by the tsunami.

But it wasn't the use of salt water that caused such surprise inthe nuclear science world, it was the use of that radical of a step that soon. Basically, trying something that extreme...which had obviously never been done before...would be a last ditch step before filling the entire site with sand and concrete.

You might want to look into getting a clue. The hydrogen isn't coming from the water. It's coming from the cladding on the fuel rods. When they get to hot it begins to oxidize with hydrogen being one of the byproducts.

Now go wipe your nose, you fucking crybaby.

Needless to say, total incompetance is a necessary requirement for any post in the Oplatelip administration.

Fortunately, the Japs didn't get this helpful memo as they are busy dropping water on the pool by helicopter and have water cannon trucks standing by. They further anticipate power being restored in the next few hours.

They're probably advanced enough to be able to calculate the weight of ice, then they're advanced enough to pick themselves back up off the floor when they're done laughing at this idea.

For one -- it ain't canatcky -- it's above freezing during the day, so it's doubtful there's a very large solid chunk of ice to be had... granted, I'm unsure of this, sooooo, let's assume this frozen lake is available...

How, exactly, are you planning on moving this frozen lake?

Only plausible way I can think of (and I'm all ears) would be with a Sikorsky Sky Crane, which can carry 20,000#.

Math, anyone?

20,000 pounds divided by ~8.35 pounds-per-gallon works out to a whopping 2400 gallons of water, which would barely cool off KCScott's swimming pool after Papa Willie peed in it.

Dins is way ahead of me. My findings indicate that Japan's plants have two layers of containment walling and only allow for venting excess gas OUT. Dropping a frozen lake onto the plant would only serve to damage the outer concrete layer.

Fortunately, the Japs didn't get this helpful memo as they are busy dropping water on the pool by helicopter and have water cannon trucks standing by. They further anticipate power being restored in the next few hours.
Yea, air dropping water is really going to help. :meds:

Having power restored ain't going to fix plumbing that was blown to kingdom come last week. And it ain't going to fix the pumps either.

Their last ditch efforts using water drops and water cannons are being described as "using a squirt gun to fight a forest fire," and, from what I've read, they're a long way from having any power restored. They're fucked.

When they get to hot it begins to oxidize with hydrogen being one of the byproducts.

Now go wipe your nose, you fucking crybaby.
Oh, so it's magic? :?

The reason there's hydrogen there to be released and oxygen there to oxidize, is that the overheated rods are in contact with...wait for it...water.

Now either do a better job of Googling so you can add something to the discussion or fuck off.

Aw, hold on...

Now I'm not suggesting the Chimp could properly oversee or manage the opening of a jar of peanut butter...but he was POTUS when this went down..

With fears of a possible nuclear meltdown in Japan continuing to escalate, evidence that the nation received warnings over the stability of its power plants from an international watchdog more than two years ago has emerged via a new round of diplomatic cables accessed by WikiLeaks.

As the Telegraph is reporting, an official from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in December 2008 that safety rules were outdated, and strong earthquakes would pose a "serious problem" for the power stations.

A U.S. embassy cable quoted an unnamed expert who expressed concern that guidance on how to protect nuclear power stations from earthquakes had only been updated three times in the past 35 years. The document states: "He [the IAEA official] explained that safety guides for seismic safety have only been revised three times in the last 35 years and that the IAEA is now re-examining them. Also, the presenter noted recent earthquakes in some cases have exceeded the design basis for some nuclear plants, and that this is a serious problem that is now driving seismic safety work."

The Telegraph also reports that the government responded to the warnings by building an emergency response center at the now-embattled Fukushima Daiichi plant designed to withstand magnitude-7.0 temblors. Friday's earthquake, originally named a magnitude-8.9 shock, has since been upgraded to magnitude-9.0.

Among the other shocking disclosures: Taro Kono, a high-profile member of Japan's lower house, told U.S. diplomats in October 2008 that the government was "covering up" nuclear accidents and ignoring alternative forms of energy, including wind power, according to the Washington Post.

So you're asking...should the leader of the free world have take an initiative to insure the safety and stability of the biggest buyer of our worthless T-bills?

Well, yeah..

And did he?....

Oh sure, you'll insist, the Chimp would never intervene in some other nation's internal affairs.....right? I mean not without real hard evidence...?..right?

And of course the Chimp and his handlers would want to move ahead--like world leaders do--with bold new areas of energy development, like wind and solar...right?.

Now wait just a minute... aren't you the guy who was extolling the virtues of Japanese safety standards compared to the U.S. just a few days ago?

Way to KYOA while trying to blame Bush, you pathetic dipshit.

What's next, you going to explain how global warming caused the tsunami?
