Associated Press wrote:Obama's new rules will transform US auto fleet

DETROIT – Some soccer moms will have to give up hulking SUVs. Carpenters will still haul materials around in pickup trucks, but they will cost more. Nearly everybody else will drive smaller cars, and more of them will run on electricity. The higher mileage and emissions standards set by the Obama administration on Tuesday, which begin to take effect in 2012 and are to be achieved by 2016, will transform the American car and truck fleet.
The new rules would bring new cars and trucks sold in the United States to an average of 35.5 miles per gallon, about 10 mpg more than today's standards. Passenger cars will be required to get 39 mpg, light trucks 30 mpg.
That means cars and trucks on American roads will have to become smaller, lighter and more efficient.
Eric Fedewa, vice president of global powertrain forecasting for the auto consulting firm CSM Worldwide in Northville, Mich., said the changes will make pickup trucks so much more expensive that they will be used almost exclusively for work.
And instead of a minivan or SUV, more parents will haul their families in much smaller vehicles with three rows of seats — something more like the Mazda 5 small van, he said. The Mazda 5 gets about 28 mpg on the highway.
"I think what you'll see is a lot more creativity in interior packaging," Fedewa said. "You'll get more rows of seats where you traditionally had cargo space."
Already on Tuesday, some drivers were skeptical. Dixie Bishop, who runs a plumbing business in San Antonio that uses vans, worries the new requirements will drive up her costs at a time when customers are cutting back on repairs.
"Are they going to take my horsepower down?" she asked. "I have to be able to carry old water heaters and toilets. It's not beneficial for me to haul one water heater at a time. We need the power to pull these heavy items."
The changes will start with smaller cars and trucks, and improvements to the internal combustion engine, Fedewa said. Automakers also already working on new technology, including direct fuel injection and high compression of the air-fuel mixture, that will make cars and trucks more efficient.
Car companies are rewiring vehicles so components such as air conditioners and power steering pumps are powered by electricity rather than by the engine, saving fuel.
And they're developing computer-controlled transmissions with six or more gears, adding efficiency, and rolling out more gas-electric hybrids — among the few cars sold today that meet the 2016 standards.
Of course, developing the technology will cost money — billions of dollars — and automakers will pass that on to their customers.
The Obama administration says the changes mean the average vehicle would cost about $1,300 more, although some private analysts say the increase will be much heftier. The administration says gas savings will make up the difference in about three years.
Automakers have said they need stable, relatively high gasoline prices to create a market for electric vehicles. General Motors fears rolling out its rechargeable Chevrolet Volt next year with gas at $2 per gallon.
American consumers have already shown their car-buying habits can change rapidly depending on gas prices. When fuel cost $4 a gallon last summer, people flocked to smaller cars. Gas is much cheaper now, and sales of hybrids have plummeted.
"The U.S. consumer has consistently chosen performance over fuel economy given the relatively low cost of fuel," David Leiker, senior automotive analyst for Robert W. Baird & Co. in Milwaukee, wrote in a note to investors.
The Volt is designed to run 40 miles on battery power when it is fully charged. After that, a small internal combustion engine kicks in to generate electricity and keep the car going. Other automakers are working on similar systems.
But the Volt is expected to sell for $35,000 to $40,000, and buyers may be unwilling to pay that much for a sedan, even if tax credits help ease the burden, unless gas prices soar.
Rechargeable electric vehicles, which under government calculations could get 100 mpg or more, will help automakers meet the standards and offset sales of larger, less-efficient models.
Under Obama's plan, the sale of of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids could also generate "super credits" that would count as more than one vehicle when an automaker determines its average fuel economy and emissions figures.
The new rules cause manufacturers "to accelerate their technology plans, probably a little more aggressively than they originally thought," said Tony Posawatz, who heads development of the Volt's technology. "For us, we feel comfortable that we've got choices."
Just a few years ago, GM and other auto executives were doubtful they could meet even less stringent standards, but Posawatz said the technology has changed since then, especially with new lithium-ion batteries.
GM also is looking at electric trucks, which may bring them even closer to the goals, he said.
Earlier this year, Toyota said it planned to launch as many as 10 new hybrid models worldwide by early 2010, and it plans to bring a new version of the Prius to the U.S. in the coming weeks. Honda's new Insight hybrid is already on sale in the U.S. Mazda, meanwhile, has said it plans to focus less on hybrid vehicles and more on improvements to its basic internal combustion engine.
Looks like freedom comes with limits. This is absolutely fucking ridiculous. The idea that Americans are going to be forced into "smart" cars by the federal government is unbelievable. What is next?
This is what happens when you elect a Socialist. Americans wanted change and they are going to get it. It hasn't even been 4 months and all the stuff promised during the campaign is changing.

He has tripled the budget and made these companies dependent on the government. If that is not socialism, then I do not know what it.

Bullshit. The technology for long distance electric vehicle travel already exists. And anybody who thinks those vehicles can't generate horsepower hasn't seen a Tesla in action. If anything, Obama has been far too conservative in his approach to mileage standards.

And how about the electrical grid to handle all those thousands and millions of electrical vehicles you would like to see on the road? Wind? Solar? Excuse me while I laugh in your face.

You morons are pissing up a rope.
And anybody who thinks those vehicles can't generate horsepower hasn't seen a Tesla in action.
Neither have you. They've only built a handful of (very expensive) prototypes. Is Preston Tucker ringing any bells for you?
Wrong, the Roadster is already in production. And the model S is scheduled to roll of the line in 3 years. All that done by a Silicon Valley startup. You're telling me Detroit can't do better?

I will keep my SUV's while you liberal elites can have the electric, tesla, hybrid, pieces of crap.

One thing that article didn't mention was how poorly the new "lib tard" cars do in accidents. Prolly left that out because they totally suck. The car companies set their crash ratings on ramming the car into a stationary object. In those tests the Priass and Smart car do ok. In the insurance industry tests they crash the same cars into moving objects. In these more realistic tests the Priass and Smart car become a coffin. Crash one of those into a Camry at three times the weight and physics says the Camry wins every time. Ramp that up when the Camry becomes the Caddy, or even a small SUV. Make the other car a suburban and good luck finding the body of the driver of said Priass or Smart car.

Insurance companies are taking note and limiting BI on the policies of these super small cars. Even side impact crashes are seeing huge claims in these smaller cars.

Just a couple of quotes around on the new Pres Hussein proposal:
Adrian Lund, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, has been one of the most outspoken opponents of the move — by automakers, regulators and consumers — into small cars.

When the rules are finalized, if they "leave the automakers the option of downsizing, clearly we're going to have some safety consequences," Lund says. "Smaller vehicles do not protect their occupants as well as large ones."
"The deadlines are so tight that downsizing will be a tempting compliance strategy" for automakers, says John Graham, the former rulemaking chief in the Office of Management and Budget.
The move is also an example of the clout environmentalists have with the Obama administration and comes as automakers' dire financial straits are forcing safety to a back burner. It raises the risk that cash-strapped automakers will take the fastest and cheapest route to building more fuel-efficient vehicles: Make them smaller and lighter. Further, as General Motors and Chrysler rely on federal bailout money for survival, they are ill-positioned — and disinclined — to fight proposals that some say may not be just dangerously costly, but simply dangerous.

The National Academy of Sciences, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Congressional Budget Office and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have separately concluded in multiple studies dating back about 20 years that fuel-economy standards force automakers to build more small cars, which has led to thousands more deaths in crashes annually.
President Obama this month withdrew the name of his nominee to lead the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, longtime safety advocate Charles "Chuck" Hurley, after an outcry from environmentalists over Hurley's statements linking fuel-economy rules to highway deaths.
The tilt toward smaller vehicles, which were often heavily discounted to sell, boosted the death toll, the studies say.

Sample quotes from WSJ, USAToday, Houston Chronicle.

I believe Justice Holmes would call those "fighting words". And yes, there are limits to freedom.

A) WTFRU talking about? Schenck? That wasn't a "fighting words" case. Chaplinsky? That was written by Murphy after Holmes left the Court.

B) Are they "fighting words" as per Chaplinsky? No, because there is no way they will incite "an immediate breach of the peace" what with 88DNAdefects being 1,000s of mile away from sunny California.

I stand corrected. Please revise my remarks to indicate that Justice Murphy would have considered those to be fighting words.

Have you no love for the rabbit population of the suburban Cleveland area? Right now, 88 is whipping up a batch of 5 alarm chilli peppers thanks to you. By nightfall the streets of 88ville will be running with the blood of hundreds of distressed rodents. And if that isn't a clear and present danger...

But I digress. What I really should be saying is that you are a clueless fucktard who doesn't even understand when someone is making an argument for you. The fact that I mangled the Schenk and Chaplinski rulings into some kind of bizarre amorphous solid does not detract from the fundamental point that there are in fact already established "limits to freedom", it only shows that I have not made it past the first year of law school and am therefore unlikely to pass a bar exam anytime soon.

The Obama administration will soon be enacting legislation that suspends the laws of physics as it relates to these automobiles and the green movement and anypossible downside the laws of physics could have in these situations. That new law will make your point moot.

Get over it, or get the fuck out.

We aren't becoming socialist, but we are certainly adding more socialistic practices into our system. A system that has never been entirely without them.

Thing is though, it is the will of the people. Stop acting so outraged. Obama was elected because this is what the majority wants. And its not changing any time in the near future, or likely anybody in here's lifetime, so its time to get over it or get the fuck out.

The liberal movement has been working at a grass roots level for a very long time to get to this point and is just begginning to see the fruits of it's labor. I've heard conservatives complain about "liberal indoctrination in the schools" and while its a bit of hyperbole, there is some truth to it. For more than a generation now the vast majority of kids' teachers have been very liberal. And its not only in schools. Its in youth sports, youth TV and entertainment and many other places. They been getting their message out, and impacting people's values, since Sesame Street began 30 years ago

Staunch conservatives talk about socialism bolsting the bottom at the expense of bringing down the top. And that has some truth to it as well. But do you really think that that "argument" is going to sway anybody of these generations that grew up playing sports without keeping score, making sure that the worst kids got just as much playing time as the best, to play "just for fun" rather than to win?

Do you really think these people don't want these changes? Their value systems are simply vastly different than conservative values. If you don't want it you should leave, because things aren't going to get any better.

You want to change it? Well, better start getting staunch conservatives to become teachers at a higher rate than liberals. Better start getting staunch conservatives to start making children's programming.

My guess is, since we are talking about a group of people that are talking about working less to avoid getting into tax brackets over a quarter of a million dollars, you aren't going to see them 'stooping' down to earn a teacher's salary any time in the near, or distant, future.

The people have spoken.

Did you ever get that car dyno'd, before and after, to see what the real HP was?

Do you really think these people don't want these changes? Their value systems are simply vastly different than conservative values.
Bullshit. The People are just fucking stupid. They voted for the empty suit because they got spooked by an economic crisis he helped to create, I don't recall him having a lot of ads about raising the price of gas to $4/hr or telling manufacturers what kinds of cars they could build.

Hell, most of there dipshits probably still think he's only going to raise taxes on 'the rich' and that 90% are going to see a cut.

yes, 82hp gain at the wheels after the 3 upgrades, there is an even higher level that you can get with a different juicebox upgrade but its the wife's car and not mine, shes happy with what it does now.

He is going to allow the 2001 tax cuts to run out returning everyone to the rates they were paying under Clinton. The taxes everyone pays will go up but Obama will say that he didnt raise the taxes, just didnt continue Bushs tax cuts. It's just another way that some jackass liberal can try to define the word "is"

Funny watching the little lawyer get his ass trampled in this one. One must assume that he's about this good at his job. Who in the fuck would want to hire this little shit-eating douche to represent you on something actually important?

Not me.

I think this is a case of ....how did Rom Emanuel put it?, i think it was something to the order of ,"we have to take advantage of this bad economy to make change". I paraphrased.

You have to be careful when you invite the government into your back yard as the auto companies have with there desires for bailout, because they might start telling you how to run your company.

Its like 88 said, liberty...were losing it and not enough of us care.
