R. Gosselin NAILED it- the Chiefs are finally doing it the right way, building through the draft instead of overpaying veteran players and free-agents.

Gosselin states there that KC had the best '08 draft.
As we all know by now, making a statement like that makes little sense.
It's speculation.

KC is in full rebuild mode, so yes, I totally agree that going young is the way to go.
I can't say I agree that it was a good move to deal J. Allen, though.

Sometimes a team can get 'trapped' in a cycle of remaining old, and I think the Chiefs were in that kind of cycle in the middle of the first decade of this new century.
You KNOW you are old, but you feel like you're SO close to getting the current group over the hump to a championship that you continue to add free agent pieces in hopes of finally getting all the tools in place to make it happen.

Sometimes it works, ... rarely, ... but very often a team just gets TOO old and it becomes painfully obvious you've got to tear it down and start over.
That happened to Oakland when they tried to hold together a very old team for ONE last run after they lost the SB to the Bucs.
They tried to hold an old group together and it the bottom TOTALLY fell out.
This set their rebuilding back by a couple of years and the organization paid a heavy price by being a laughingstock for a good 4-5 yrs.
Only now are they piecing together talent that might legitimately help them back to respectability.

Vet players are nice to have because they tend to not accept losing as easily as young guys do.
They know how painful losing is and they want to do anything they can to avoid that painful feeling.
Young guys haven't yet built up that distaste for losing as strongly.
And young guys DO make more mistakes.

I think KC is doing the right thing by going full out for youth right now, but I'd like it more (if I was a Chief fan) if there were a FEW more solid vets still hanging around.

I guess those are the vets that are sprinkled in.

They're gonna take their lumps alright this season....if they get to 7 wins I'll be completely shocked, but this by and large is what ChiefFan has wanted them to do for a long time now. Herm gets a free pass this year, but I want to see improvement across the board and with any luck '09 will be the year they get positive results.

Wagon, I could have put LJ on that short list of KC vets, but I don't view him as much of a leader.
I see him as a 'me' guy.
Not the kind of vet who young guys gravitate to and want to follow.

The Dungy 'youth' strategy is good if you've got a reasonable core of solid vet guys in place to go along with it.
He had that both in T.B. and in Indy.
I just question if KC has that.
In fact, I'm pretty sure they don't.

I see the same problem with Oakland right now.
They are a very young team, and that is fine, but I look around and I see almost NO established leadership.
This is a problem.

Leadership needs to come from the QB.
The QB needs to do things right and he needs to play well.
If he does that, others will follow.
This QB situation doesn't appear on the horizon for KC.

If Allen was over 30 I think a stronger case could have been made for moving him.
Purge the team of age and salary.
But he is a young beast at a key position on the field.
I just don't see it as a wise move to trade that for draft picks ... hoping to hit the lottery with those picks.

Right now I see KC as a 6-win-or-fewer team.
That's fine if they are moving in the right direction.

As Paul said, perhaps they can get their shit together and make a real push in '09.

You just traded away one of the best defensive ends in the league in the prime of his career for a throw of the dice. That indicates desperation not intelligence.

The same was said of the Dallas Cowboys when they traded Herschel Walker to the Vikes in 89 for all those picks they got. Last I checked that worked out rather well for them. That may or may not work in this situation- only time will tell.

Rawlings is the best brand of football helmet ever made. The didn't skimp on the leather (like Spaulding, et al) and go out of their way to provide extra padding to protect today's players. Walker was never, at any point in his career, considered to be one of the best at his position. He was a draft bust who never lived up to the expectations that were had for him coming out of college.

That's a historical inaccuracy. Walker was out of his mind in 3 "pro" years right out college. He holds the professional record record for most rushing yards (2400+) in a "season." Yes, I know it was the USFL, and yes, I know it was 18 games. But still, how else are you to measure him during his post college years? You did say "draft bust", right? Or did you mean NFL draft?

Furthermore he had at least 1,500 rush/receiving yards his first three years in Dallas and was coming off a 1,500+ rushing (2,000+ rush/rec) yard season the year he was traded. I'd say, he lived up to expectations… right until the day he was traded. Not bad for a 5th round NFL draft pick.

He averaged over 1000 rush/recieving yards per season.

Minnesota never really used him as a feature back.

He missed his first 2 NFL seasons (played in the USFL for 3, but the USFL allowed early college departures when the NFL didn't, so the net loss was 2 seasons for his 3 USFL years).

Despite this, he's #8 all-time in combined yards.

And one of the best blocking RB's the league has ever seen.

Big big Herschel fan over here, but that's from his collegiate achievements more than his professional ones.

But he could be Marshall Allen Dorsett-Brown, and that trade was still fucked.
