No. 3 Chargers (12-5) at No. 2 Colts (13-3) -- Discussion

Post by poptart »

Many people might view this as a blowout, but I don't.
I see a pretty tight contest.

The Chargers have some offensive weapons -- other than LT.
But is Gates dinged?
Hmmmmmm .....

Despite Norv being a perennial fuck-up, Chargertard being obnoxious and m0ronic, and Indy playing at home -- and being explosive, I call a close game.

Indianapolis - 23
San Diego - 20

Last meeting between these two teams, Manning single-handedly put A. Cromartie into the Pro Bowl. This time P. Rivers wears the Human Turnover hat:

Let me get this straight....

San Diego needs Manning to throw six picks in the rain and to run back a couple of them to put a lead on the Colts in the first game and yet only manages to win because a last second FG goes wide. In the rain... On the road...

Add to this picture that the Colts are coming off a bye and are getting their best receiver back...

Not going to be close.

No need to make things more complicated than they need to be when picking this game. It really boils down to one thing, how much confidence do you have in Phillip Rivers leading his team to a playoff road W??

Indy- 24
Bolts- 10

... a few thoughts.

The latest line has the Bolts as 9 point dogs. If Gates doesn't go it should be around -15

Phillip Rivers vs. Goober...Yikes
The Bolt defense vs. Colts offense...narrows the huge edge Manning has over Rivers.
Wayne vs. Chambers...Wayne
Lt vs. Addai...LT
Clark vs. Gates...Gates
Clark vs. Manumalawhatever...Clark
Harrison vs. Jackson...Jackson (over an injured Harrison)
Pineapple vs. Dungy...Dungy
Home field...Colts

looks like a Colt victory!

Oddsmakers don't know shit. The Bolts match up well with the Colts. That 3-4 defense should kick Manning's ass.

Somewhat close -- especially if you take into account that Addai played his divisional games against teams that actually played some semblance of defense... since the other AFC Westers were in a logjam, trying to duke it out to see who could be the worst run-D in the NFL.

The Galloping Ghost couldn't even muster 5.0 against that divisional slate? Dude... Selvin Freaking Young clowned Ladainian Rockne's YPC, and he didn't even have the benefit of playing against Denver's run-D twice.

But now Manning has had TWO WEEKS to study the Blot D....that guy will beat ANY team (including the Patriots) when given that amount of time to break them down.

What the Chargers have to do.

Run, Run, Run. If Moon Face Turner were smart, he would shorten' the game by keeping everything between the tackles. Yeah, yeah, we all know how LT is a big proponent of the sweeps to the outside, but the Pineapple needs to squash that gameplan. Indy is small on their front seven. LT and Turner need to run hard and run often. I think alternating these guys early will give LT his opportunity to run sweeps to a small and battered Indy defense late in the game. If Turner tries to beat Dungy's Tampa 2 coverage with long passes, then forget it. SD needs to control the clock and doing so, the Chargers must run dump offs and short routes to establich long clock eating drives.

Keeping the Dork off the field will be the only way the chargers win this game. Since that horrific showing in SD, you know he will do everything to make Cromartie his personal bitch.

With Harrison returning, the Chargers defense can't just key on taking Wayne out of the game. Much like against Brady, teams need to get after Manning on a regular basis because the worst thing to do with a great field technician is give them time to throw. I don't think we'll ever see Manning throw 6 picks in a game ever again and I'm sure redeeming himself for that performance is in the back of mind. Rivers won't have his safety net today with Gates being out. Tomlinson will have to be all-world for the Chargers to win this one.

So far I'm not seeing any kind of Colts "blowout" here....in fact, Golden Boy has looked rather AVERAGE today.

Aside from the picks, the passing game looks healthy. He's only got 5 incomplete/intercepted passes in 29 attempts and he's got catches from 8 different receivers. The key has been neutralizing LT. Jackson has been the best weapon on offense for the Chargers.

Even without LT and a less than healthy Gates, the Chargers are looking like they could beat the Colts!

Big props to the Bolts.
Going on the road and knocking off the defending champs is big time.

Mvscal was right about the defense giving Manning trouble.
His numbers were alright, but the turnovers hurt.

And SD did what you have to do to win on the road in the playoffs -- make some plays and put up SEVENS.

I'll tip my cap to Norv for having his team ready to play.

Should be a good one next Sunday.
