HighSchool Boys basketball on National TV?

Post by MSUFAN »

(Defering to mods, wether this belongs in CBB forum)

I'm not sure I understand what Good there can be by showing a nationally televised game of 16 and 17 year olds playing basketball.

And the thought that Duke Vitale is rollin around these sites to do these games, scares me a bit. Why would HE need to be doing the broadcast?

Wed. night, (18th)- some kid who's signed with UNC and some other kid who's going the Dook route, were playing a High School game. And ESPN2 was there to bring it ALL to you. All 5 camera angles!

Can anyone seriously build an argument FOR this new trend?

A few years ago. I (and others) contemplated what would happen when they start showing High School games on National TV. ESPN being the obvious leader in this department. I remember saying that since College games were such HUGE $$ makers, the HS game can't be far behind. We've seen it the last year or so, in HS football. ESPN started doing tape delay broadcasts.

Others argued that it'd never happen. They exploit the 18+ year olds in college enough, no way will they allow the corporate greed mongers to go into High Schools. Little Billy barely has any hair on his nads, yet the team is getting pressure to wear Addida's for their big TV game this friday?!

I don't get it. Why must we trash the last real amature sports known to the U.S. public? And, believe me, in due time, the greedy corporations will trash it. They'll use and abuse the players, coaches and teams. Anything to make a buck.

HIGH School!? I'm stumped.

Someone help me out here.

Oh, btw, PLEEEEEEEEASE don't go the "Gymnastics -Figure Skating - Tennis - Golfer" route, ok? I don't want to hear that crap. We're talking BIGTIME TV broadcasts, of bigtime sports. That make bigtime dollars. Not side sports played by individual phenoms.

Thanks.

If Duke hadn't been playing tonight, I would have gone to see this one because Ellington and Henderson are the real deal. I work right by the Palestra.

And his is the 3rd year ESPN has broadcast high school games. They did it with LeBron and Sebastian Telfair.

I lived in Illinois for 3/4 of my life, and I used to love to watch the 8-team state HS hoops tourney which was televised state-wide each year.
Great stuff.
Pure, energetic, authentic, NOT spoiled, team v. team.
Blood, sweat, and tears.
Great sports drama.
Loved it.
Ate it up every year.
Sports as it ought to be.

This ESPN HS crappola is the antithesis of what I just described, however.
All about the jack, all about the INDIVIDUAL, all about who can get what from whom.
Whores, pimps, and johns.

Sicko world we live in.

If a local outlet wishes to televise high school sports
on a "game of the week" basis--fine.
National coverage and ratings systems for high
schools should be banned. I don't even care for
state ratings.
You want to see a high school that does there own
things ?? This is where I used to teach.

High school basketball is unwatchable. Went to a few games when I was in HS, talk about boring set plays, and very little skill.

We had our token black, one of the tallest people in our HS and he sucked ass. Our 5'9" QB was the best shooter at our school.

Other than the McDonald's All-America game, I have no interest in high school hoops. I don't even keep up with what my old high school's team. I like seeing who is getting recruited by the major programs but I don't want to see their high school games.

In Idaho, yes.

In America it's pretty good.

Thanks for the responses. I kinda thought that y'all in here were pretty well informed.

The "talent" level angle, was right on. I know that these games might contain one or two real bonafide college stars later, but the rest of the wideeyed younsters are just pylons on the floor, for these studs to walk over. What good can there be from broadcasting that on national TV. ESPN is a Pimp. -- hey, who said that before? - (Or was the quote; "The NCAA's a Pimp.") ?

The NBA is unwatchable. College still has a good product, though.
