Scapegoat
Looks that way.

The 49ers were 8th in total defense this season.
They kept KC down, for the most part, in the Super Bowl.
Sure, they gave up the last drive when the season was on the line, but it was Patrick Mahomes, and he was in 4 down m0de.

Fired?
Maybe there were some "internal" things we don't know about, but on the surface, it seems like a scapegoat firing.

Differences in philosophy, personality conflicts, players’ opinions, etc. likely contributed.

Yes.
Maybe Steve Wilks regularly came to the 49er facility and insisted that everyone address him as a bird.

So lets employ 49er logic.

I'll start posting retarded threads and Mickey and fiatlux get kicked off the board. It's the San Fran way.

Let me help you out a bit.

Even if the Niners won the Super Bowl. The DC was going to be fired.

This isn't a surprise to anyone in Niner Country. The surprise is it didn't happen sooner.

He was a bad fit for what the defensive personal was formulated for. He's a good DC for a team that runs a 3/4. His background is as a DB coach which is fine. He was suppose to run the defense that the Niners had run in the past few years. Which would maximize the front four and linebackers.

For example; He would run a zero and blitz. It would drive the players, coaches, and fans crazy.

The only reason the Niner D was so highly rated was they have the best talent in the NFL by far. The reason the run defense was so highly rated was the team was always ahead so much in games that the other team had to pass the ball. If you look at the yards per carry. The defense was in the bottom half of the NFL. Very un-Niner like.
