The Good Old Days

Post by Mikey »

The early 70s was a good time to be a music fan in the Bay Area. This is an ad from the SF Chronicle in November of 1973. I had graduated from HS that June and was home for the Christmas break when I went with a couple of to see the ABB at the Cow Palace on New Year's Eve (50 years ago tomorrow). Opening act before Marshall Tucker was the Charlie Daniels Band. Boz Scaggs, and Jerry Garcia and Bill Kreutzman of the Grateful Dead jammed with the bothers during a show that lasted until about 4:00 am, including a pretty memorable 34 minute Mountain Jam.

Box Scaggs’ Lowdown was supposed to be used during the famous dance floor scene in Saturday Night Fever but Columbia would not release the song to the studio. The Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive with its famous recurrent two bars drum track was rushed to studio for the movie.

What an incredible turn of events. Can’t imagine what SNF would be like without The Bee Gees.
