He Gets Us

Post by Rootbeer »

I hadn't heard of this group until the Super Bowl so forgive me if this has been discussed before.

I clicked around their website and thus far I'm impressed. Their heart seems to be in the right place. I haven't found a DONATE button yet. You can order some of their merch and they don't charge for it. I'm not sure how they get funding; we'll probably find out it's a Russian troll farm or something. You just never know these days. One thing I am sure of, this is not a Joel Osteen enterprise or there would be all kinds of merch sales and fundraising going on.

If I get some distraction-free time I plan to click on their Chat Now button and tell them I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Then we'll see just how far their diversity and inclusion stretches.

Is that just something that you would tell them, or is it actually true?
It's true. I guess I've been gone a long time. Poptart and I used to go the rounds on religion 15 years ago.

And yet ...why would ANYONE believe a single word of the ancient Hebrews and their insanely radical claims? Why?

Until Constantine caved in desperation and declared Rome's officlal religion to be "Christianity," no one ever considered the Hebrews to be valid in any capacity.

How has this happened? Both the Christians and Muslims are informed and girded with basic Judaic religious dogma.

It's completely insane and criminal.

I’d like to think that the rabbi in the New Testament would have fed and clothed the poor rather than wasting money on a Super Bowl ad.

Not that I'm a Christian or anything, but I do believe that spreading The Word is part of mission, yes?

Spreading the word is part of the mission because, "..it becometh every man who hath been warned to warn his neighbor." If I found a treatment for cancer, I would share it with you; if I knew a dam broke upstream I would tell you; if I found a treatment for hopelessness, I would share that with you also.

I have not watched the whole play. I've seen some clips and suspect I've seen maybe half of it. What I know is that the South Park dudes took a whole bunch of artistic license in creating the story. I am quite well versed in LDS history; the good, the bad, the ugly, and the weird. A lot of good information (including the bad and the weird) has been published in the Joseph Smith Papers Project over the past 12 years or so if you're interested in digging into the raw history of Joseph Smith. The jist of the JSPapers is to publish any and all documents relating to Joseph Smith. Every note, letter, memo, legal proceeding, etc., and in their original form wherever possible.

The Book of Mormon play preaches a severely bastardized version of church history and treats Joseph Smith Jun. very badly. That being said, I did laugh at some of the clips I've seen. In the context of parody, it's pretty well done. Too many people believe the play is the "real truth" and that is simply not true.

Jesus is the Christ, and those who make this confession are the church. Matthew 16:16-19.

Being the Christ means that Jesus is the fulfillment of the three offices of Scripture -- Prophet, Priest, King.

Jesus is the Prophet, the Word of God, Who leads people to meet God. John 14:6.
Jesus is the Priest, Who solves our problem of sin and death. Genesis 2:17, Romans 5:12, Romans 8:2.
Jesus is the King, Who has overcome Satan (who enslaves mankind). 1 John 3:8, Matthew 28:18.

Jesus is the Christ.

Make no mistake...
Apart from this Christ, a person will fail miserably, and eternally so.

I would hope to see He Gets Us, or any other Christian group, emphasize what is vitally important.

Yes, Book Of Mormon is the best Broadway musical in many years--there's nothing even close. It's a miracle that it could have been made at all considering that it's decidedly Politically Incorrect, non-Queer, and openly critical of fundamental cultural aspects of the sub-Saharan black populations. And yes, I'm referring to the actual practice of fucking babies as a supposed preventative measure against getting AIDS.

The tunes are solid throughout, with several real hits. The composer Robert Lopez and his (female) wife are an amazing team. And it is indeed hilarious--much better writing than the South Park show.

As for the Jesus the Socialist argument, it's thin at best. Just as Mother Teresa (actually a small Albanian man) probvided no food or medicine to any of the wretched and fallen in the slums, so Jesus gave no thought to the morrow, merely insisting that he be worshipped. The image of the endless buffet of loaves and fish following the Sermon on the Mount makes no sense in any literal implication, but rather that belief will be rewarded with spiritual food. Clumsy but clear enough. And as for the whole Revelations imagery and features, deriving any meaning from it is like playing poker in a small boat and all the wet cards are wild.

You'd have to be seriously brain damaged to believe the play tells the "real truth" (whatever that means) about the church. It contains enough kernels of truth, stretched well beyond the limits of ridiculousness and tastefulness (would you expect anything less from Parker & Stone?) set to some decent and, as a bonus, highly offensive music. What more could you want from a historical religious musical comedy?

I was living near Ogden when the Mark Hofmann thing was going on. Mormons are known for many things, but among their passions are historical documents, especially those pertaining to the church. The "Great White Salamander" scandal was all over the local news out there, but it turned out Hofmann forged it, blew up a couple peeps, then survived his own car bomb explosion before he was convicted. I'm guessing the amount of documentation the church has on Joe is voluminous.

It's interesting to get different historical perspectives about various groups. If you haven't already, check out the first Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet. Mormons figure prominently in it and how they're described is a bit different than perhaps one would expect. But maybe not to someone like you who might have a better sense of their history than I did when I read it.

I am not trying to prove the Bible to you.

I just offered a very short summary of who the Bible says Jesus is, and what I wish He Gets Us (and any other group) would focus attention on.

You can think whatever you'd like about the Bible.

That's your own call to make.

I think the word has been spread. Anybody who wants to become a Christian has the wherewithal to become one any time they feel whatever power move them. Every single city and town in America has churches of Christian denominations. So if you’re going to try to promote Christ, maybe you should try to do his mission.

What I mean is some people think anything strange or scandalous is somehow more likely to be true. It happens with hardcore dogmatic beliefs of all stripes, including within political spheres.

The "Great White Salamander" scandal was all over the local news out there, but it turned out Hofmann forged it, blew up a couple peeps, then survived his own car bomb explosion before he was convicted.
I was living in a neighboring state when the White Salamander letter was going on. I don't remember hearing a lot about it but years later I saw a pretty good documentary about Hoffman. He was a brilliant guy. He could have been wildly successful at any number of legitimate professions, none of which would have ended with car bombs. What a strange, strange story.

I downloaded it on Kindle. I'm reading five books at the same time right now but I'll cycle around to A Study in Scarlet and give you my thoughts.

Conservatives are up in arms about children being read to by transgendered people because of their safety.

Yet even after Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland & Uvalde they aren't concerned about the threat to the safety of children posed by weapons.

And now it gets even richer....

As a corporation found to be employing children to clean dangerous slaughterhouse equipment overnight in 8 states, the GOP in several states wants to legalize child labor.

Apparently republicans only are pro-birth so that they can put more people to work who aren't old enough to understand their rights.

Weapons are inanimate objects, dipshit. They do not pose a threat to anyone. They just sit there inert until a nutjob uses one to kill people. So, what do we regulate? The inert object or the nutjob? Take your time. Think it through assuming that you are actually capable of independent thought.

Christ himself went directly to the pimps, whores, dirtbags, drug dealers, mentally disturbed, violent predators, etc.....etc......to spread his word, BASICALLY today's Democrat controlled cities, where the low-life sub-humans live and poop in the streets, share needles, and always vote democrat.

Fertile ground, where the totalitarian party makes things worse, not better.
Excuse me, "JB," but where exactly do you infer that Jesus encountered any pimps, whores or ne'r do wells? Upon which actual chapters and verses in the gospels is this spelled out? The allegation of Mary Magdalen being a prostitute has gained a lot of traction, but where is any actual assertion of her being so? For that matter, it's been similarly suggested that she was his defacto wife. Okay, just more seeing what one wants to see. Same with JC being a "Prince of Peace" when he clearly states "I come with a sword" at one point. And as for his "politics," he says "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's" and similarly that slaves should obey their masters--because as always through the gospels and epistles, the End Is Near.
