Win 8.1 or just reload 8?

Post by smackaholic »

Cockblock's laptop is all jacked up. It is less than a year old. It starts, you can open programs, look at pics and stuff, but as soon as you try to open a browser it pretty much loses its mind. I suppose this is a virus, although, I can't imagine that a fine upstanding young man such as CB could possibly have gone to one of the dark corners of the interwebs where such viri generally hang out.

Fortunately, there is nothing on there that I can't live without, so I wanna just do a clean re-install. WIth 7 I could do that without a disk. Is this the case with 8? I do believe that MS is doing free 8.1 updates. Should I do that? Do I just give my key to MS and they send me an 8.1 disk?

Ask them to send you a copy of 7. Windows 8 blows goats.

Every now and then we agree on something you old fukk. This would be one of those times. I am hoping that they unfukk things a little with .1

I was told there is some program you can run that makes 8 look and work like 7. Maybe I will get that.

What brand of laptop is it?

There should be some key or key combination to press at start up to access the recovery partition.

It's a shame he can't access the recovery partition for his yard.

OK, that'll rack, even if it is aimed at me.

It is a Toshiba.

Actually, my yard does have a recovery partition. It'll hit in in a few months. It's called a foot of snow. Trouble is, it gets corrupted a short while later.

Try this:

To reinstall your laptop to the factory settings / "out of the box" settings, please follow these steps.

ALL DATA WILL BE ERASED ON YOUR HARD DRIVE IF YOU PROCEED. YOU WILL NEED TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE THE POWER ADAPTER PLUGGED IN. DO NOT SWITCH OFF OR RESTART YOUR COMPUTER DURING THIS PROCESS.

1) Hold down the power button for 10 (ten) seconds to switch off your machine.

Please note: Holding down the power button on the machine forces it to switch off. Any unsaved data will be lost.

2) Press and hold the 0 (zero) key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook.

3) When the machine Starts beeping; release the 0 key.

4) When prompted by the warning screen; select Yes to continue with the system recovery.

5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software; click Next.

6) Select Recover to out-of-box state. Click Next again.

7) Click Next to Start recovery.

Or...

1. Restart the computer.

2. Repeatedly tap the F8 key until you see the Advanced Boot Option Screen.

3. Select Repair Your Computer and hit Enter.

4. Select your country >> OK.

5. On the System Recovery Options Screen select Restore Application.

6. Follow the on-screen instructions.

8. When prompted, select on "Full Factory Recovery"

9. Select Next >> Yes.

10. After a couple of minutes the recovery will be completed.

Marty in the geek forum reminds me of MVSCAL in fhe food forum. All polite and helpful and shit. And can manage to get through a post without telling someone to go fukk themselves.

Just don't let any of that pussified behavior leak into CdS.

And thanks for the help, comrade.
