Capturing Digital 8 to DVD

Post by indyfrisco »

Ok, I've seen a different thread rlated, but wanted to post my own.

I have a Sony Digital 8 camcorder. Works great. Got it as a wedding gift 6 years ago. Now, I want to convert all these to DVD.

My old computer shit the bed. I was using Nero software and a firewire cable to copy the tapes to my computer. This was very slow and hogged up space/memory. So, I bought a Gateway DVD recorder thinking I could play the 8MM camcorder sending the picture and audio to the DVD recorder. This worked ok, but the DVD that was recorded will only play on the Gateway DVD recorder. I can't get it to work on my computer.

I have a new computer that runs Windows Vista which my Nero software won't work on. It's a powerful computer and I would much prefer to burn to my hard drive and then make DVDs from there. My questions is what Vista compliant software should I get and what hardware? I really don't want to spend a ton of money, but I would love to get these videos of my kids on DVD so I can 1. put copies in the safe deposit box and 2. share them with my family in Texas.
