XBox 360 Question

Post by KC Scott »

My sons are 8 & 6 and they are wanting Halo 3 - so looks like we're going to be getting a 360

What is the deal with the hard drives - obviously no one in store can tell me what purpose they serve.

Is it just to store saved games / progress?

It's an $80 jump system wise which is OK - if they really need it.

Only thing they'll ever be doing is playing games in house - No Xbox live.

I've also researched to look for the HDMI logo on the new boxes - Wiki also daid the new ones have a 65nm CPU - but looking over the boxes at Sam's today I didn't see where the CPU was designated.

All help appreciated

Remember that MS is hoping to turn the Xbox into your multi-media dream station. The Hard drive does impact game play in that you can save downloadable games/content on there as well as your game progress. It however does a lot more, allowing you to save multi-media stuff, such as music and movies on there. Sure, by not having xbox live, you are limiting your capabilities (xbox live offers downloadable games, trials, movies, tv shows, music, etc..) but you can still use the HD for gaming and other things. You can also add the HD later I think.

Incidentally, I played Halo 3 last night on a projector and it was awesome.

Thanks Taco - ended up buying what I think is a good deal - the 20gb system including Forza 2 and Ultimate Alliance for $349 (this is the new bundle and has the 65nm CPU) at Gamestop. Also got a used Madden 2007 for $10. Bought 2 contollers at Sam's for $75 and copy of Halo 2 for $55 (even the used copies at Gamestop were $55). Also reserved them a copy of Guitar Hero 3 - due for release end of this month. So they'll end up with 5 games, 3 controllers and the pro system for about $625.

Damn, my kids are spoiled.

Guitar Hero is all kinds of fun, even for us "adults."

Are you going to pick up an extra guitar so they can play together and/or against each other?

Disn't know it was a two player game?

I've only played it once on a PS2 - and frustrating would be the firat word that came to mind.

Oh shit... Here we go again.

Seriously, Guitar hero is a lot of fun. Just think more of Simon than playing in a band. As a guitarist, I have to "turn off" normal guitar skills to play. I have a harder time playing songs on Guitar Hero that I can play on a real guitar than I do songs I'm not familiar with. It's all hand to eye coordination.

Yeah, musical ability is certainly not a prerequisite for the GH games. I could see where it would help in getting a feel for the rhythm, but that's about it.

I believe it was Dave Mustaine who said that he can barely play the Megadeth songs on GH and GH2... and he created the damn songs. Yet some 8 year old kid can absolutely destroy at the game.

OK, The 7 year old got the X box yesterday and we hooked it up - Damn - the power brick is huge.

He and his brother played Halo3 mostly, they both tried GH - but seemed to get bored pretty quick.

After we got them to bed, I started playing around with it. Horrible is a good adjective.

90 minutes later, I was doing "School's Out" at full speed, hitting 94% on Guitar and 97% on Bass - yes it was on Easy (only 3 buttons), but considering the previous height of my musical ability had been inserting a CD, I was stoked.

My wife laughed her ass off when I told her to flash me or do some other groupie thing while I was playing. Of course I got distracted whenever anything popped up on the screen (and would subsequently miss full sections of the song so it's not like I would have noticed anyway

I can easily see how this could become like crack - I've been jonesing all day to go fire it up. If this had been around when I was in HS, I'm about 99% sure I'd never have graduated, played football or even left couch in my basement except to change the bong water.

I started playing on the Hard difficulty. It was realtively smooth sailing, as only a handful of songs took a few attempts to beat, and then I hit the last set. Slayer's "Raining Blood" and Metallica's "One" are nearly impossible. I can't imagine them on Expert.

I went back and polished off the game on Medium. I'll go back and 5 star the few that I didn't get on the first attempt. I'll then try to tackle Slayer and Metallica on Hard again. My hand literally cramped up trying to play the solo on "One."

When I have spare time, I usually just plug my fender Strat into my marshall amp and play a real guitar.

Tried playing rock band on PS3, got bored with the guitar, and the drums fucked me up, because I kept playing to the song, not the timing of the colored blocks on the screen. Really didn't enjoy it all that much.

it reminded me of those arcade games where I'd see kids dancing to the colored squares on the screen, except in RB you use your hands.
