Ok so this is the place, not to ask a question (that should be done in your own thred) but to post your experiance with a piece of software used to Rip & Burn DVD's. Each Post should include the name, website, place to download, why you like the software and the strenghts and weaknesses. You can also include guides for ripping DVD's to Ipods or any other format.

I'll throw in some tools that can be very valuable but are not free:

Nero Ultra
I am a big fan of Nero, which is not free but is generally required to burn DVDs for all the Rippers and if you get the full version, it does include some DVD authoring tools. It also offers tools to convert a DVD into a Video CD. It offers, music, video and picture editors and authoring tools. Has tools to Rip CDs, Tapes and LPs to AAC and MPEG-4. It even has some DJ Mixing tools. For $79, you absolutely need this if you want to get creative. It even has some TV capturing tools. You really can't get better for the money.

QuickTime Pro
If you are looking to create videos for the IPod, for $29, you can get the full version of Quicktime, which allows you to convert certain formats to Ipod compatible videos. Yes, Pro is available for Windows as well as Macs. Here is a list of what it can do: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/whyqt/

Pinnacle Studio
Alternatively if you plan to do some editing of home videos as well as converting to the Ipod video format or the PSP video format, you may want to look into Pinnacle's Sudio 10. This is great for doing home videos and making them look semi professional if you know what you are doing and have some decent footage to work with. It can't rip DVDs but if you convert a DVD to avi or some other PC video format, you can then use it in your videos or convert it to IPod or PSP video and watch it away from home.

Alcohol 120
One of the best CD rippers and tools that I've come across is Alcohol 120. This really will not help with DVDs or movies but it is an awesome tool for Games and CDs. At one point it was an absolute must if you wanted to copy Games and program CDs to get around some of the built in copy protection techniques that companies are using. Another awesome feature is the ability to create unlimited virtual CD roms that you can share. We actually use this feature at work to backup our CDs and then share them as if they were sitting in a CD Rom on a computer, saving wear and tear of our CDs. You can definately find 'free' versions of alcohol 120 out on the web, but at $39, especially for a company, its a great deal.

RealDVD
Legal DVD ripping with RealNetworks RealDVD!
As you can see from above, RealDVD will rip any DVD for backup purposes with everything to your Hard drive, including a DRM to protect the media. The upside is that it only costs $30 but the downside is tools mentioned above already do this for free!

This tool allows you to burn back some of your DVD rips back to a DVD. Per the website: "ImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit!"

PS: make sure you understand what each tool does before you spend money. These tools are great to have, but they aren't necessarily useful if you just want to copy a DVD movie.

Ive used this program to convert XviD and DivX files to a playable DVD to play like any other DVD. the biggest problem is it take like 3-4 hrs to convert the codes and burn them to disk, but you can make your own DVD'd of say the entire sopranos series and use only about 3 disks. the menu features are not the greatest as you can only change the title of the menu and the font size, but the quality is fablous. most entire series fit on 2 disks, and with most downloaded DivX or XviD having been copied using HD format you will be amazed at the quality.

DVD rips to a variety of .avi wrappers in Linux with AcidRip.

Chopping up and editing video files with Avidemux.

Edit: ConvertXtoDVD is the shit.

Found myself in need of Ripping a DVD -There was a documentary and it had some great info on how one of our clients used our product.

Recorded it on my DVR, burned it to a DVD (using my Magnavox DVD player / burner) - then used this software:

to rip it out and convert to .avi - Note I also needed to install the Divx codec on my laptop

From there I was able to edit out the commercials, add some graphics and transitions with Microsoft Movie Maker which is on board my Dell.

Real quick learning curve to do all this - less than 2 hours to create some pretty decent infomercials

I dumped total video converter and got convertXtoDVD - with the same results I've had on a bunch of other DVD burn attempts:

it takes 30 minutes+ to convert and then an hour to burn and when it's done - the DVD can't be read and there's nothing in the log file indicating a fail.

I had maybe one successful burn out of 6 or 7 attempts with with Total Converter and I did all of the following:

1. Had no other programs going or browsing durning the conversion
2. Rebooted prior to doing the conversion / burn
3. burned on a slow speed (4x)
4. used a decent quality DVD

WTF? in this case the raw footage was an .avi - but I've had fuck ups with .wkv, .mpg also -

That sounds odd. I haven't experienced anything like that. For me the time-consuming part is the conversion - the burn is usually 7-8 minutes. If it's taking that long for you, then perhaps that's where the problem is? Perhaps you could convert the files, and do the burning separately with something like DVD Decrypter?

I considered that and was going to DL Nero - but then i found another program - Winavi.

Amazing - it actually worked the first time I used it.
Converted a 2.5 hour video in about 30 minutes and burned it in 10 at 4x

I may roll with this for a while until I find it fuckung up

DVD Fab is the only piece of software I've ever purchased.....
updated almost weekly.....usually will have any new encryption program solved within a few days....I've talked to them a few times and they are some smart motherfuckers.....
