I remember them well. They glory days of the Raiders.
Madden was a great coach.

7 division titles in 10 years
Never had a losing season
Won the Super Bowl in the '76 season

Unfortunately Madden's Raiders to go up against the great Pittsburgh Steelers, or else John would have won more than just one Super Bowl.
Both of those teams were Titans in the 1970's.

First video game I ever bought with my own cash was Madden 93 for SNES. Madden was such a pioneer he has had his "own" videogame franchise for almost 30 years in a sport he stopped working in professionally over 15 years ago when most teenage gamers had not been born yet. Just amazing.

John Madden making 85 is amazing itself. Given the tons of food he slammed at the buffet tables and the lines of blow with Rodney Dangerfield he should have punched out 20 years ago.

I’ll admit Screwy, I kinda threw the rake out into the yard with my ‘95 blast. But to really go back in time and analyze those games is something else. I too had M’93 on SNES (and have today all those Madden games on the Raspberry Pie) and it probably had the best graphics and gameplay, though M’92 played faster though a tad bit choppier. But those two were the best versions.

I remember the trickiest part of M’93 was calling the right
personnel lineup (Normal, Big, Fast, etc) in conjunction with the right formation in order to ensure that it was Barry fucking Sanders getting the handoff and not Mel Gray. Or better known as “RB#20” and “RB#23” respectively. But still a fun game.

Madden used to tell great stories of growing up in Daly City with best friend John Robinson and the two of them regularly making their way to Berkeley to watch Cal games from Tightwad Hill.

I remember the Raiders playing home games at Cal.

Between 1971-75, the Raiders played 8 games against 7 different teams in Memorial. They were 7-1 in Memorial.

That said, it is fair to also note that early Al Davis was a genius, and those Raider teams of the 1970s were stacked with talent.

Also, John's coaching career was quite short (10 seasons), for a great one.
He bowed out before any losing came his way, which it inevitably does for any coach that hangs around a good long while.

But John took the Raider talent and organization that Al built and just flat out KICKED ASS with it.
He had a winning way, and as a Raider fan at that time, there was nothing more sweet.

The Raider mystique in those years was a real thing.

Nice recap. Sometimes I'll play the old Madden games on my SNES and Genesis emulators. The games are fun for about 10 minutes. I mostly enjoy seeing who was on the rosters then and the 16 bit music.

Though I've always been a Falcon fan first, I liked the Raiders back then (as well as the Cowboys & Dolphins). Most of it was because you just couldn't help but love Madden. What a team of characters, though...

You're right. I was looking specifically at the 1977 team that won the Super Bowl. Marv Hubbard was truly bad ass, but gone a couple of years before that as were a few other greats that could be added to the list, including the ones that pops mentioned.

I'll have to add a few that were playing in the earlier days.

Got my son into football playing Madden with him. Simply put, Madden has had more influence on football than anyone since Paul Brown. We see and hear the game differently because of Madden. I still remember what he had to say about his broadcasting style in "One Knee Equals two Feet." He wanted more people to understand the game on their level. Last year, the three highest rated prime time shows of the year were Sunday, Monday and Thursday Night Football. Mission accomplished. RIP

Oddly enough, there was one dude from those 70 teams that I liked.

Dave Casper.

Dude just looked like the all American boy which made him stand out from the rest of that motley crew who looked like they all belonged in police lineups.

There’s no denying that Madden was a world class human being.

Sure was hard to tell I. The 70s though watching him rant like a madman on the sideline.

The Stingley injury was horrible luck. Was a clean hit with really shitty luck for all involved.

As a fellow Cal Poly alum and an original Raiders PSL holder I met him a few times at various functions. The 1960 plane crash that killed 22 of his football buddies was one of the reasons he stopped flying in the late 70’s. He was a good dude.
