So why don’t we find some sort of solution in the middle somewhere?

The reps know that they benefit from single day, in person, ID required voting.

The Dems benefit from large scale mail in and multiple day voting.

Seems like a sensible solution would be multiple day in person, photo ID required voting. Absentee voting allowed only when a voter can demonstrate a need. The overwhelming majority of these would be military.
